I've actually wondered this myself. I have an iPod 4g and an old Android running 2.3 Gingerbread. I'm a little worried about the lag that's likely to come, but I also know that Mojang has been reliable in the past. It might be a little rough, but I'm sure they can figure something out... I guess only time will tell. XD
I'm on a iPad 3, and I reckon it will lag a bit still. It probably depends on all the other stuff you have on your iPod and how much space and things. It will probably crash every now and again on iPods.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

This is true. As they add more features the game will become more RAM intensive... Let's all remember though; this game is a work in progress, and some experimenting will need to be done. The developers and the players will succeed and/or fail together as we piece together a masterpiece. XD

True. Because mobile devices are limited to the amount of ram they use.

I'm hoping the next update works well on an ipod 4g, I have no plans of getting a newer device in the near future.
Answer: you either won't get the update, or you will but experience lots of lag/crashing. If you saw the image ThatOneCrafter just put up, I'd go with his advice. Besides, the iPod 5th-gen isn't that much. *sarcasm*

Its not the price just the fact that it feels that I just got my ipod 4g recently (even though its been almost 3 years since I got it)
Maybe after 2 or so years, I might get a new ipad or something.

Maybe if I put it on the minimum settings it will work well? (Smallest view distance, fancy graphics off, animated water off)
Even if I run minecraft pe with max setting on my ipod 4g it works very well with very minimal lag.
As an iPhone 5s user, I can tell you that it will even be very intensive on those as well, and they are currently one of the best phones on the market.

Lucky. I also use iPod 4, but my world has A LOT of mining systems in it. If I put up max view distance, the frame rate drops and it crashes within a minute or two. Though it works fine with second highest view distance, along with other graphics settings on.
This has actually made me worry less about caves in future versions, it makes me think that all I'd have to do is turn down the view distance a little.

Hm, I should get an iPod 5... Maybe on my birthday. (Feb 15th)

... What a coinsidence, that's my b-day too.Yeah, from the problem I have on my world, I have been considering getting a new iPod as well, though maybe, after it comes out, an iPod 6?

We should be birthday buddies. Loljk.
I'm going to see the specs of an iPod 5.
I think the best solution is to maybe turn down some settings like turn fancy graphics off, turn down the render distance, turn beautiful skies off and maybe even turn animated water/lava off :/ Btw I have an iPad 2 and iPhone 5c and have to admit that I do experience quite a lot of framerate drops on my iPad 2 especially when I'm playing on ported maps

Ah the glory of the iPhone 5s. I have never experienced a single frame drop even on ported maps on highest settings, but that infinite worlds setting will definitely be a stress tester.
Well, you never know what Mojang can do. They have made quite some good optimisations every update, and they must've said that infinite worlds should work on all devices for a reason.

How on earth will you even be able to play this on an iPod 4G?

How do you port maps?
