I just started playing MC yesterday and I am already loving it. I REALLY want mods though, I'm just scared to download it. When I go to a website with mods on it, I'm not sure if the website is safe and free. No virus's, no nothing. Just download the mods. I'm playing on a Mac though so I'm not sure if the mods will work. I will make a list of mods that I want in a spoiler right after my questions.
Questions:
Are mods free?
How many mods can you have in MC?
Can you play with different mods on the same version of MC? ( EX: Too Many Items 1.7.5; CraftingGuide 1.4.2 < -- updates not real, based off my head )
List of mods:
- Too Many Items - Jammy Furniture Mod - Pams Weee Flowers - Pams HarvestCraft - Pams all the Seeds - Pams Melon Spawn - Crafting Guide - Mo' Creatures - SteamShip - SailBoat - Aurora Rubealis - 3D Katana - 3D Dagger - 3D pink handgun - Biomes O' Plenty - Tree Capitator (Timber) - Fossil Archeology - Optifine 1.5.2 - Minecraft Forge 1.5.2 - Code Chicken Core 1.5.2 - Not Enough Items 1.5.2 - Familiars API 1.5.2 - GUIApi 1.5.2 - Damage indecator mod 1.5.2 - SCMowns Title Screen Mod 1.5.2 - Direction Torches 1.5.2 - Genders mod 1.5.2 - Rei's Minimap 1.5.2 - MrCrayFish's Furnitures 1.5.2 - BackTools 1.5.2 - CoralReef 1.5.2 -Custom Mob Spawner 1.5.2 - SCMowns Patches / Configs 1.5.2 - Inventory Tweaks 1.5.2 - Hasters Mod 1.5.2 - MatMos Sounds mod 1.5.2 - Minecraft Comes Alive 1.5.2 - RPG Inventory Mod 1.5.2
This site is by far your best option to avoid files with malicious software. Try "VirusTotal", its a website to scan links, that should help. And as for the Questions:
Yes, mods are free. (Some with servers do charge beta access, and some have perks for monetary donation)
As many as are compatible. Some mods only work by themselves, yet others have no incompatibilities. Ive run 150+ mods in a single game.
No, all of the mods have to be the same version, and that version must match that of the game. So a 1.7 mod and a 1.8 mod will not work together, but even a 1.7 mod, and another 1.7 mod will not work with a 1.8 minecraft.
As for that mod list, id have someone you know who is more expeirenced with modding to install them for you. (But just by looking, i know from past use many of those mods are not up to date. Keep in mind the current game is in 1.7.5 and anything below that will not work.[This being all of those 1.5.2 mods]) Best of luck!

As a pre question remark: Unless you've watched an ungodly amount of Let's Plays, you should play some more "vanilla" (unmodded) Minecraft, getting a good feel for the game's basic mechanics before you add anything else.
There is no coded limit as far as I know, but each mod will cause a bit more drain on your resources until, at some point, your computer is just too slow. In addition, some mods are not able to work with some other mods (this is called a "conflict"), and that'll be your limit.

Nope, as each mod needs to be the same version as the version of MineCraft you are using. If you're using 1.4.2, and you tried to load a 1.7.5 mod, it'd throw an error. If you tried to load a 1.4.2 mod in a 1.7.5 MineCraft install, you'd get an error as well.
Fire And Ice
Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice

Yes, mods are free. If someone tries to charge you for a mod, look elsewhere.

I'm currently running 270 mods.
You should also think about looking into "modpacks", which are pre-made collections of mods. I'd suggest the Resonant Rise pack (http://www.atlauncher.com/pack/ResonantRise/), which you can get using the ATLauncher (http://www.atlauncher.com/).
Good luck!

These aren't the only ones, but you should avoid them. Most mods aren't viruses, so you should be fine.
