I know, I know. Light up caves around, make sure you're 25 blocks away, I've already done that.
I made a simple 20x20 mob grinder, with 2 levels. The chamber is 23 blocks tall (because I want exp for enchants) so I made a little AFK hidey-hole a few blocks away from the killing area, making sure to dig down a few blocks. Some mobs DO drop, but 50% of them die on impact. Nonetheless, it's very slow. In the tutorials I've watched, they have tons of mobs dropping constantly. I get 1 mob every 20-30 seconds or so. Obviously, I don't get nearly enough levels for enchants. Help?
I have lit up the surrounding area, but I didn't know about the 128 blocks thing. Should I rebuild the entire grinder up 128 blocks, or can I just go up to Y128 myself (since im the player and mobs spawn around me)? Yes, mobs are dropping, but it's quite slow.
Yes, if you are 129 blocks or more above the ground nothing will spawn there (or in caves below it).
Of course you need to be within 128 blocks of any part of the mob grinder where mobs are still alive, drop sorting and storage can be further away from you.
If you are keeping the mobs alive to get XP then you might want to be within 32 blocks of them or they'll gradually despawn.
Update: I built a new one over the ocean, and It worked SUPER well in the beginning, but now nothing is dropping. It's on a realm, could it be that my other friend online is hogging the mobs?
Are you playing in a server? Cause if you do, it will only work if everyone is in the AFK spot.
However if you don't try adding trapdors at the platform edges, make shure you removed every single torch inside the farm, you let no holes in the ceiling/walls and add some pilars in the platform to make the mobs's pathfinther work.
You can allways make a new farming spot 128 blocks above the farm or make the farm at Y:161 above an ocean biom.
Thank you everyone for the replies. I AM playing on a Realm, and after some testing, I've realized that if someone else is far away, mobs spawn near them and not the grinder >:(.

Have you lit up everything out to 128 blocks in all directions?
The easiest way to do that is to build more than 128 blocks above the ground.
Are all the mobs dropping?
So they don't stay on the spawning floors filling the mob cap.
Just testing.

OK, so i'll go 32 blocks above my chamber but at y 128?

Could well be, if they are near unlit caves and not killing the mobs there then the caves would gradually fill up as you kill the ones near you.
Just testing.
