This is great! Anyone have recommendations on a basic guide to choosing launchers for MineCraft and assembling modpacks or using mods and resource packs? I know that's not "beginner," but it seems to me that lots of beginners, once past the first night and a bit, would like to understand how MagicLauncher is different from the Minecraft native launcher, and how things like LiteLoader or Twitch compare to them!

Well, there's this thread: Mods FAQ and security considerations.
It has info about the different launchers and mods in general. Although some of that info is outdated and the thread can be a bit tedious to browse.
Here's a quick summary of the different clients (From my perspective):
MagicLauncher: Makes it easier to manage mods.
Twitch Client: Makes it easier to manage mods and helps you find/download mod packs.
Liteloader: (I've never used this one) Is supposed to have a selection of mods that are very lightweight. The downside seems to be that it has a limited library.
Personally, I just use the Native launcher. When I was younger I'd use Magic Launcher to easily enable or disable mods and nothing else.
Nowadays I just keep a shortcut to my .minecraft folder on my desktop and keep an "Inactive Mod" folder somewhere in there. Whenever I want to change mods I just move them in or out of the Inactive folder.
I recently tried using the twitch client but found it a bit difficult to browse; I also couldn't find some of the modpacks I wanted. Wasn't a big deal though since I can just use Curseforge's Modpack Section for all my modpack needs.
It's actually pretty simple to add mods to the native launcher. Here's a video guide on how to install mods on it:
P.S.All (non-liteloader) mods I've seen require forge. You'll most likely have to download it even if you don't use the Native launcher.

Good quick brief on the launchers! My impression is the LiteLauncher -- I just looked at it -- is primarily good for use on servers and for multiplayer MineCraft. I didn't see many mods there, that were relevant for singleplayer.
I fiddled around a little trying to get Optifine and Java 64 bit and a launcher (any launcher) to cooperate with a couple of other mods, and so far, haven't gotten it all working together.
Yes, it seems a lot of docs are outdated. For example, I read that you can't delete profiles you make in Twitch, but guess what? You CAN delete a profile. I know that I'm a latecomer to this fascination, so probably I just need to catch up!!
I've been recording a 100 Day Tutorial with benchmarks or milestones; because minecraft can get monotonous and/or directionless. Its after playing minecraft with my 8 year old son and he kept on creating new worlds rather than developing an existing one. I think he likes the initial challenge of the start up; but he lacks the patience of mining for diamonds...
Anyway the 100 day tutorial is based on 100 minecraft days ~ 25 hours of play. It goes into:
a) setting up house (on an island);
creating crops (wheat);
c) creating a shaft mine (to the bottom);
d) creating a farm (cows and chickens);
e) mining for iron; exploring dungeons/caves;
f) being an explorer bring samples of your world back to your farm (and planting these items if possible);
g) preparing for the nether;
h) making traps and redstone devices;
i) mining for diamonds; excavating around lava pits.
(up to day 55 out of 100).
Anyways back from the segwey - two important discoveries about trees.
1. They can grow inside a cave; as long as there is heaps of light (from jack-o-lanterns) and space for the leaves; adjacent to a water block; sapling planted on dirt.
2. Trees can grow in the nether :-O. You need to clear out any nearby fires; plant the sapling on a dirt block.
also if you're on an economy server, make sure to check their started guide if they have one. Can usually get a head start if theres a decent ingame economy
Hello, New to Minecraft. Been plaing for about 2 weeks. Build a boat and went exploring. Have found 3 villages in the dessert and 2 temples, 2 ships that I raided. Etc. Been looking at some videos for help. Now I am lost. since I slept in many beds I don't think that my spawning will ever be back to original site. And if I take my recent bed and die where will I spawn ?? Plus I really don't like the 20 minutes of daytime. whish it was longer. My trouble is really the mapping system that I still don't understand very well, specially where is X=0 Y=63 Z=0 ??
1.I strongly recommend everyone to craft a shield! Shield protects you from damage of any mob (even from creepers).
2.Have a bucket of water.This can help you not getting fall damage and when falling in lava.Also can help you fighting endermans.
3.Dont collapse your sword/shield/tools/armor,... If its on low durability put it in chest and then repair another echanted item (if you have it)
4.Put fence (or cobblestone walls) around your house to protect it from mobs.
5.Dont craft compass (lol) when you put recipe for it in crafting table it already shows your spawn location in the crafting table.You dont need to craft it.
Probably not, this thread in particular and this section of the Minecraft forums is for the vanilla version (primarily the Java edition that Mojang works directly on, the Bedrock edition that Microsoft oversees has its own section of forums).

Don't know if you need this but here's a list of trusted sites to get mods from:
Minecraftforum.net (Of course)
Curseforge.com
Curse.com
Planetminecraft.com

Hi
This is a really good guide, though I suggest update the material as many things changed since Alpha and Beta
Well thanks!

I wrote a world generator that would be really fun to play in survival on, and I want to tell people here about it. It's a Spigot plugin.
Can I post about it in this section?

Thank you for the great introduction.

I think you should immediately launch this as a book with the title "From Beginners to Pro Player: Minecraft" that will be good:D
lol yes. That would be epic and awesome. How about explaining this in a YouTube video though?
