One question: When you are cutting down the tree are you checking on top of the leaf blocks that are decaying? Half the tree saplings I get are from leaves that have decayed on top of other leaves and with those mega jungle trees so high up you could easily miss seeing a sapling before it's decay timer runs out. Also, I should point out that with mega jungle tree branches it is impossible to cut all of the wood without breaking at least some of the leaves, therefore lowering your chances of getting jungle tree saplings a little.
Has anyone tested if the sapling drops are affected by the biome you plant the tree in? I was working in a desert area and needed wood so planted some trees... The sapling drops I was getting from them was a lot less than if I would have planted them in a biome like plains, forest etc. Haven't done any more thorough testing though at this point.
Alot of this conversation is from last month, but now you cant do the one jungle sapling, 3 others thing. They fixed it. And I still find getting saplings is a hard bit of work. But heres two things that I find MAY work.
Might Work; The longer a jungle tree has sat, the more chance of sapling drops
Positive it works; If you destroy the leaves YOURSELF on a 2x2 tree, you get ALOT more drops. This isnt true for any other tree, but it just might be for these. I cut down a 2x2 tree and let them decay, and got 2 saplings. I went to one of my other trees and killed the leaves myself BEFORE the decay, and I got 20. So. Something to think about..
I haven't really tried farming jungle trees as of yet but I do have 12 jungle saplings. I think I've only destroyed 4-5 trees and letting the leaves decay naturally but I haven't been paying much attention to the sapling drops so I'm nearly certain I got more than that.
Just try putting 1 jungle sapling down and putting 3 other different kind of saplings beside it and using bone meal on the jungle sapling (Like what the others said).
I've noticed that I usually get more drops from any kind of tree if I cut it down and let the leaves decay naturally, have you tried that?
I don't think so.
This is the method called when a leaf decays.
private void removeLeaves(World par1World, int par2, int par3, int par4)
{
dropBlockAsItem(par1World, par2, par3, par4, par1World.getBlockMetadata(par2, par3, par4), 0);
par1World.setBlockWithNotify(par2, par3, par4, 0);
}
This method is called in the above method. It is also called when destroyed by hand.
public final void dropBlockAsItem(World par1World, int par2, int par3, int par4, int par5, int par6)
{
dropBlockAsItemWithChance(par1World, par2, par3, par4, par5, 1.0F, par6);
}
This method is called in the above method. It determines whether or not a sapling and/or apple will drop.
public void dropBlockAsItemWithChance(World par1World, int par2, int par3, int par4, int par5, float par6, int par7)
{
if (!par1World.isRemote)
{
byte byte0 = 20;
if ((par5 & 3) == 3)
{
byte0 = 40;
}
if (par1World.rand.nextInt(byte0) == 0)
{
int i = idDropped(par5, par1World.rand, par7);
dropBlockAsItem_do(par1World, par2, par3, par4, new ItemStack(i, 1, damageDropped(par5)));
}
if ((par5 & 3) == 0 && par1World.rand.nextInt(200) == 0)
{
dropBlockAsItem_do(par1World, par2, par3, par4, new ItemStack(Item.appleRed, 1, 0));
}
}
}
This makes it so that saplings drop instead of the leaf block.
/**
* Returns the ID of the items to drop on destruction.
*/
public int idDropped(int par1, Random par2Random, int par3)
{
return Block.sapling.blockID;
}
I totally agree. Most of the time I plant one jungle sapling and never even get the sapling that I planted back even when the tree despawns. This is difficult for survival games such as skyblock and skygrid where resources are limited. All other trees like oak and acacia usually give you more than one sapling when they despawn.

Jungle trees are only effective when you plant them to make giant jungle trees (4 saplings in a 2x2 square), which should give you plenty of saplings; I almost always get at least four, sometimes more than twice as many, from one tree, and accumulate so many I end up using them as fuel. Here is what the Wiki says about saplings dropping from trees:
Most trees will drop more than one sapling (four for giant jungle trees and dark oaks). The only exception is the small jungle tree, which will probably drop only one or even zero saplings. This means that to make a jungle tree farm, it is necessary to farm giant jungle trees.
A wise man once said, that nothing really dies, it just comes back in another form, then he died. So next time you see an ant, it could be him!

just use 1 jungle and 3 any other sapling, and bonedust the jungle. it works.
Yes, I got 12 saplings from one tree, planted in a swamp biome.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
