If I want to stay to the normal game, I usually use Optifine and Inventory tweaks. I haven't used better world generation except in FTB, but I would see it as fine as long as it doesn't include the new blocks, unless they're only for decoration.
I would say as long as it doesn't give you a very big advantage, and doesn't change the entire game.
Personally i have Rei's minimap (cant stand getting lost) Better world generation (to try alpha and beta terrain) and thats all I have changed from vanilla (oh and 64x sphax pureBD textures)
But hearing some pretty interesting responses from people though, keep those opinions coming....
I've actually migrated away from Rei's minimap and back to the oldschool vanilla compass. It's much better now that you can frame them and put them on a wall with compass/clock for orientation....(plus uses f3 ;p).
I have had a 100% vanilla legit survival world since May of 2012. I only use mods like optifine, rei's minimap, and other mods that don't impact the game much. They keep everything vanilla still. (EE, IC2, and other large mods are what I mean by "impact.")
been meaning to check out the shaders mod, but it will probably melt my craptop lol i have seen potatos with more power. Cheers everybody for your opinions, most people seem to have the same idea, which is sweet. I will be putting up some pictures f my epic town soon, the outer walls are 300 blocks long a side and the central keep is nearing the height limit. All built in survival, will post pics once its complete
Build Craft changes the game quite a lot by adding things like quarries which are automatic, they give you more resources over time but even a quarry has a cost, if you want a big quarry it costs more but if it is small it will cost less. PLUS they leave huge holes in your worlds. If you want to run a quarry however you must have fuel or coal and a red stone signal (you can also use the redstone engine for no cost but it takes a very long time). BC is pretty legit cause even if it pays of at the end you still have to do so many other things 'legit', it only speeds things up.
I would say Equivelent Exchange is kind of cheaty and all items need more costs because if you have a cobble stone generator and an exchange(not sure whats it's called) chest with a diamond you have infinite diamonds. MORE LIKE A DIAMOND GENERATOR. Im not saying its a bad mod but I think they could make it a little harder. (I really dislike how they change sunlight into any item) BUT...it's still an epic mod which is fun when your goals isn't getting resources.
Lol you must be really determined to find a legit mod to read this long post.
(I <3 DIVINE RPG, soon it will become 1.7.2 and live and reigns and rules the world it doesn't make anything more or less legit it makes the game hardcore)

Thomas Crapper didn't create the flush toilet guys, John Harrington did, Thomas Crapper founded Thomas Crapper & Co, a plumbing business. He just made flushing toilets more known and thats the story of Mr. Crapper (and Crap).

When playing with mods I prefer those that (what I think) stay within the theme of Minecraft, to improve the survival experience. Doctor Who, modern guns, Buildcraft, etc, are all no-nos for me. Visual mods, slightly gameplay changing mods, appropriate content-adding mods, is what I look for.
Visual mods
- Optifine means better FPS, therefore better gaming experience!
- Shaders mod makes really pretty scenery.
- CraftGuide, a mod that adds a book listing every recipe in the game. Should really be in Vanilla.
Content-Adding
- Minecraft could really use more ores and tools (that are balanced of course), and NaturalCraft does the job greatly!
- It's the little things like BattleTowers that add to the survival experience.
- Balkon's Weapons mod IMO adds a good amount of weapons without having that RPG feel.
- Glenn's Gases adds a lot to the mining experience and makes it more challenging!
- Mo' Creatures, enough said.
Gameplay Changing
- Mine and Battlegear 2 is a great mod that I'd recommend. Extra slots for weapons, shields, etc
- Inventory Tweaks, so useful!
- Minecraft Comes Alive, changes villages for the better.
Well it is all a matter of opinion though. Legit means either to enhance the gamer's experience, vanilla, or anything else. You CAN'T have other people choose what is "legit" or not. It is how you would want to play the game.
I've always thought that TimberMod is a pretty good option. It really saves a lot of time without breaking anything, besides how many axes you have to make.
I would say as long as it doesn't give you a very big advantage, and doesn't change the entire game.

Check out the Fantasy City Build Challenge - it's pretty amazing!

So mods that take effort to work on eg buildcraft that lets you have auto mining shizzle dizzle is ok beacuse you need to GET the stuff first
Its like pvp, you cant go and think your the best, you need to get that set of diamond armour first
