Quick question, what mods do you consider alright for a "legit" survival world? Obviously TMI and NEI are not acceptable, but what about things like MATmos, better world generation, biomes o' plenty, rei's minimap etc?
Or do you only consider purely vanilla to be the only way to be considered properly legit?
Everybody is bound to have their own opinion and I thought it would be interesting to hear what some of you guys (and girls) have to say on the matter.
(oh and if there is another topic like this, i did use the search bar first and couldn't find one)
Personally, if you want to have the FULL Minecraft experience, I would just stay 100% vanilla. But if I had to choose, I would say REI's minimap and Timber, because it makes it more realistic because trees don't just float there in real life, but that's my opinion. Other than that, I don't know what to say.
I do agree that NEI is alright for the recipes (especially with technic, because that adds soo many things to remember) but for some people it can be too big a temptation to give yourself some items. I have seen a few freinds do it, starts off just an item of two, then I went round to see him the other day and he had a double chest of diamond and another of emerald! I was like what the hell dude you been cheating? and he wouldn't answer lol I still give himn greif about it lol. Sorry for the short wall of text
NEI and REI's Mini-Map and as long modifications which does not allow you to grab Blocks or any items or any modifications which enable you to not play survival legitly. Most likely,Recipe Books are still okay for beginners and REI Mini-Maps are also handy for navigation.

Legit?
Only those that would make the game harder. Like the Ultra-Hardcore mod.
Mods that make the game easier, like the Timber mod or Rei's Minimap, would not make the game a legit survival game.
Personally i have Rei's minimap (cant stand getting lost) Better world generation (to try alpha and beta terrain) and thats all I have changed from vanilla (oh and 64x sphax pureBD textures)
But hearing some pretty interesting responses from people though, keep those opinions coming....
There is no "Legit" and non legitimate Mineraft experience you can have. If you're having fun while playing, that is all that matters. I personally have never used game changing mods until recently where I've started playing Feed The Best. Feed The Beast is "legit" to me and I'm having a blast with it.
Asking what a legit mod would be is very broad in a sense. But I would honestly call a truly legit mod something like Optifine. Other game changing mods could be called "unlegit" like toomanyitems or Flan's Mod. It depends on how original you want your game. Now things like the X-Ray mod are very much under the title of "unlegit". But any mod you would like to use that you think will make the game more fun is your choice! Keep Surviving
I like Mo' Creatures, but then again I don't care that much about playing legit. I cheat a little here and there. ("All that wood and I only got how much fence? "/give GoodOldHenry 85 16". There we go.")
Still, anything that doesn't give you an advantage is probably legit. Timber makes trees behave more realistically, so I think that would be fine. Anything that adds crafting recipes (RailCraft, BuildCraft, etc.) is on shaky ground since they let you do things you couldn't do without those mods. Then again, Mo' Creatures lets you tame and ride horses, which aren't in vanilla at all.
It's about how legit you want to play it.
Still, I play for fun so I give myself an advantage now and then.
I... also usually play on peaceful. (I'm kind of a wimp. ) It's not a mod, but I'm not sure how many people would consider it "legit".

The source of my intention isn't really crime prevention; my intention is prevention of the lie! Yeah, welcome to the Scatman's world!
You honestly dont need mods, ive built a massive temple inside a mountain all on vanilla. If anything you should make the game more difficult. However, pure vanilla is the only way to be legit and the only way ill play plus Sphax x128
I think a few people are confusing legit with realism, and there's definitely a difference.
I'd say anything that makes the game easier makes it a non-legit survival, and anything that makes the game harder keeps the game legit, just with a challenge. Anything that doesn't allow you to get resources easily, as well (dirt->diamonds).
Personally, I use mods that feel like they should have been implemented into the game and it still feels like a real survival to me, even more so actually. Sophisticated Wolves, which adds better AI for the wolves, Inventory Tweaks, which allows you to easily sort chests and inventory, BetterSound, which has some really nice sound improvements, and Biomes O' Plenty, for more variety in the world (however, I don't use the crafting recipes.. being able to craft coal, wool and cobble seems a bit too OP :3).
Even any mod that adds completely new stuff to the game is generally alright, as long as it doesn't give you overpowered weapons, armor or projectiles. However, it's all opinionated. This is my personal definition of legit for Minecraft, but each person has their own. I say that if you have fun, then play that way. If you are trying to be 100% legit, I will agree with everyone else and say play Vanilla.
I don't use any client-side mods. There certainly aren't too many that don't ruin the intended vanilla experience.
The only mods I use on my server are WorldGuard (to lock chests / prevent griefing) and DynMap (Google Maps.. may be pushing the 'legit' a bit, but helps when you want to show someone your creations)

Minecraft [Alpha] 1.7.3 had blocks that you can use to build with.
Minecraft now has blocks that you can use to build with.
Nothing has changed in my opinion." That is all.

Yes, this, the thirst mod can make minecraft more realistic. I think Mo'Creatures is ok too.
