Taking DGVictus's idea of having some warning, here's an "intro" with a suggestion for the first-day rules:
They've finally done it! Pressed the Big Red Button(tm). Missiles are in flight, and you have only a few minutes to find cover. The city is probably a target, so you head for the hills, grabbing anything useful you see on the way.
- Once you spawn into the map and have control of your character, pause the game and set a timer for 5 minutes.
- You can do anything you want, but must have at least 5 blocks of solid rock or cobblestone between you and the surface before the time runs out and the bombs land. (sand/dirt/gravel offer no shelter from the blasts at all - all 5 blocks must be stone of some kind)
- After the time runs out, carry on with the rules as stated in the initial post.
Edit: If you're REALLY hardcore, once the time runs out, invedit some TNT and redstone, and spam it all around your makeshift shelter, then go in and set it all off to see if you're still alive... :smile.gif:

I was thinking of that, but I didn't say it because of the texture pack xD

"And have control of your character" ha ha. I like that. Let's add in:
-You start with your portal gun and advanced knee replacements.

Chickens are spawning in my house! Help! PLEASE!
Your house has been compromised therefore you must blow it to hell.
Just a question is it possible to have glass? I think we should be able to, but if you want to have a "window" it has to be safe, and have a layer of glass, then 4 empty spaces and then another layer of glass, you have to do this for a safe window?
Also, you say we are able to shear/kill sheep for their drops, but its not possible if we are not allowed to use anything dropped by mobs... Maybe underground spiders can drop enough string for wool :tongue.gif:

Glass would be fine. The radiation happens to lose its lethal properties when passing through glass. Though it may be dangerous to build the window.

Whoa. Went off for a while and everything happened. OK, so, here goes.
@conkedup- Windows are allowed, but they'd need to be at least as thick as the exterior walls. Perhaps. Any suggestions on that?
Also, If you expand/plan correctly, you could make a mob farm. You could reclaim above ground glass (Anyone think of a way of cleaning up land so you can live in it? I'm stumped...) or you could do a bit of creative tunneling and torches and such and grow an underground farm. It would just take a lot of work.
@dabears- I believe the post said that you had one day to grab whatever materials you want. I suppose that might be a good time to claim some grass for a mob farm, conkedup?
@Speedaemon, sure, whatever floats your boat. It can only make things harder though.
@Relinies- I was thinking of that. And again, with proper planning, leather is possible. Just time consuming. I would say if you are wearing a full set of armor, you can go outside during the day. Any armor you wear still has to be left in the chest in the airlock. Throwing away all your armor sounds too harsh to me. But again, it's the principle, do what you want!
Finally, at whoever asked how thick walls need to be. The outer walls and roof must be 3 thick, including an exterior layer of Smooth stone. Any walls inside are as thick as you want.
An interesting twist on an old challenge (dwarf). Quick question: How should one treat an unexplored cave that may or may not be open to the surface?
Tips for underground challenges:
- You can use string to make wool for your beds.
- Make sure you collect starter dirt as well as seeds/saplings before heading underground. It is not always easy to find.
- Iron will be plentiful if you break into any kind of cave system. Don't hesitate to use some on armor if you find caves. Obviously, if you have no caves, you won't be needing armor, but you will need tons of picks to go anywhere.
- Glass is mostly out of bounds. If you want glass, bring as much sand as you can when you first go under.
- Building near bedrock will leave you to fight enemies that can fall from openings above you. Avoid doing so.
As long as there is no light from the surface, you're far enough that the fallout isn't going to hurt you, and neither will the uninhibited sun. So, Caves can be explored, just stay be careful how far up you go. Supposing people are going to accidentally get radiated, should there be a long, complex penalty to clean up?
Love this thread.
Currently at work so can't try out the challenge.
Ideas keep rushing into my head so in no particular order here they are:
* A Geiger machine. Basically just a water flow you dump items into in the airlock > item hits a button > activates red-stone circuitry > 40% chance of item being routed to an incinerator (deemed radioactive) OR 60% chance item being routed back to the airlock with a red-stone torch being ON indicating items are clean.
* My own victory conditions. Most likely based on self-sufficiency. Need the following things to achieve victory:
- A functioning and secure airlock (possibly involving massive piston double doors)
- Underground food processing plant.
- A full stockpile of food (2 double chests).
- A basic mob grinder.
- Fresh water infinite spring.
- Large functioning tree farm.
- Small Panic Room (made of iron).
--------------------------
Other musings.
I wonder how hard it would be to edit the code to copy the same trigger that sets skeletons and zombies alight in direct sunlight over onto Steve. This would certainly make sense to avoid going outside. Also actually adds the need for armour as it will lower the damage until you get back to base and can "cleanse" yourself in a shower in the airlock.
Someone (possibly me) should (or will) make a downloadable map where you start underground next to a single patch of grass and a 4block tree surrounded by a few torches. The bare minimum starting resources. Also this being a difficult challenge you are required to keep the difficulty set to hard.
this is a good challenge its just that.....how r u gunna get a shelter on the first night?! and how r u gunna make a cobble house coated with smooth stone house on the first night....and how r u gunna make a fresh water source for ur airlock on the first night.... i think its its good it just needs some revising...
YOU RUN WATER FROM A LAKE u wait to go out until u have water in them you dont need to make outside smooth stone even if u did just skip digging a layer and leave it and if u dont like the lake idea build ur house by a beach and dig infinite water sources until its in the airlock
You don't. You will probably have to bunker down underground with whatever supplies you could bring with you. That's sort of the point. The smoothstone lining only applies to any above-ground extensions you add later on. I would build my tree farm first, and work from there...
It does need revising though. I can't think of a reliable way to tell whether it's day without compromising the shelter, which could get you (hypothetically) killed. Suggestions?
So so far this is what I have done...
Got my resource and went below ground, created a basic shelter and descended down to make a mine, I made a TON of resource, and I think I have 8 iron blocks, 4 gold, and 2 diamond, with a few ingots here and there, im gonna start to work on making my tree grow easier and a farm to grow food
For even hardcore-er players: Use the Finite Water mod. And you have to consume 1+ blocks every day.
Also, I believe there's a mod floating around the internets that changes torches so they are no longer unlimited lasting. I've played on a server who had that.

Grow a reed to three high with a clean water source. Throw away the reeds harvested.

3 thick glass for a light
Sunlight would catch you on fire if you don't have a full set of diamond armour on.
Leather armour would drain rapidly but would allow you to get underground.
To my knowledge it should be possible. Should I give it a go?
