@Remote_Control This is supposed to be a mod-free experience, so it likely would if the mods give you an advantage, which I'm guessing they do.
@Necal You've been really helpful!
Diamonds for... Wait, logs would be more helpful for you cause this is the tree spirit challenge.
Logs for you!
OK I haven't played much since Beta 1.7 or something and and so much has changed. I really enjoyed this challenge back then so can I get some pointers on how to survive in the new 1.1? Simple things like how do you keep form starving?
The biggest challenge has been reading all 63 pages before posting!
The second biggest is this lovely challenge which I started almost a week ago real-time. My first real challenge, since I've only been playing MC for a few weeks now. No mods, no hacks, just figuring it out as I went along. The first few days were annoying, and I had to restart once because of bloody Creepers, but I found a lovely location with a little bay and few roaming sheep and called it home.
I simply LOVE this challenge, but erhm, when I see other peoples progress I am starting to think I'm doing it wrong, here is what I have:
Here is the inside:
Here is my root(Still trying to extend it even more):
Any tips? Because I cannot collect bones for bonemeals, as MOBs don't seem to spawn where my tree is located.
Looks fine to me, you're starting to get past the beginning stage there. Mobs spawn about 24 blocks away, so if you run a root out that far, you should be able to walk out on it to fight occasional mobs and collect drops.

"I dunno, ZK, that sounds pretty awesome..." "Well then, let's get awesome!"
THiS! I do t know how long it's been, or if this mod HAs been implemented, but this mod exactly the way it is, would kick ass. And BUMP!
There actually is a mod
It's calle tree spirit mod (derp)
And it's made by mythic_maniac if I'm correct
It adds spirit trees that you only can get saplings from your heart tree
You also have to be near spirit leaves or logs or else you start taking damage
And it has a heart log that if destroyed it will explode and destroy all connected roots
Plus it will kill you
It also has 2 recipes to make your life easier, bonemeal recipe and a recipe for shears that requires stone instead of iron
But those recipes are optional
My only objection to it is the texture of the spirit trees
Otherwise it's awesome
Everyone should check it out if they want to play the challenge
Here's my tree so far, it took me quite a while to finish the leaves on top. I've also started planting a ring of saplings a short distance around my tree to make it the center of a forest grove type thing :3
(hope that worked, I'm hopeless at posting images)

How many surrealists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? 5, two to hold the giraffe and one to fill the bathtub with brightly coloured machine parts.
If you want a super flat map with saplings readily available, just type in the "gimmeabreak" seed, as it still spawns a village nearby with saplings in the blacksmith chest :smile.gif:. The downside is there won't be any biomes D:. But anyways, it can be a bit more of a challenge as there will only be one sapling (you can throw all but one away?). But the constant slime noise may be annoying until you can build up a nice little wall.
Hope dis helped.
I have three ideas for the Tree Spirit Challenge, most of witch I will probably play-
1. Normal tree spirit game, nothing big.
2. Slight variation. The tree will probably be a Skyroot from the Aether mod, planted in a normal oak forest. The tree will probably be, in a sense, greedy, collected minerals and ripping up any other trees that it comes across.
3. Multiplayer Tree Spirit variation. One person plays as the actual Tree Spirit, growing the tree, the other can help dig tunnels, and protect the tree in return for things like weather changes and gifts (a golden apple for example)
A fun challenge that isn't as easy as it sounds. The first few days are mighty tough, and even after that I always have to keep my guard. I almost had to start over 15 mins in if that creeper had been one block closer. I modified the first rule a bit because I found it extremely annoying having to lay down wood everywhere I went. I found it a waste, especially in the beginning days where I could almost get to something I needed but didn't have enough wood to reach.
Instead, as long as my character can look around and see the home tree, I can run around wherever I like. It's kind of an overpower, but I don't abuse it. Can't see my tree from the other side of that hill? Don't go there. Forest blocking view? Can't go through it unless I do some trimming. And I certainly can't go far enough away that the ingame fog hides my tree. To balance this rule I also added one of my own: if I want to interact within anything that ISN'T originally from my tree, I have to stand on a peice of wood from my tree to do so. It makes it a challenge hunting animal mobs and defending from creepers and the like. When I go spelunking/mining I also leave a "root" behind me, and I only go so far as I can extend that root.
I've finally reached cloud level and will start the canopy soon. Not bad for a weeks worth of work
Heart Wood!
I have no idea what all I should put in the trunk. I'm planning on making a house in the canopy.
this is an awesome challenge and im really considering trying it out. I never do challenges, i just dont have the patience, but this is just a neat idea.
My question is, how exactly would deep mining work? Make a staircase hole and replace the steps with wood as you go?
God does that sound tedious, but also exciting.
Now the question remains, what tree/biome to start with? I most definitely want to stay away from the jungle biome, that just doesnt seem fair. Birch wood looks really nice, but they seem a bit more rare than other kinds.

edit: the seed "Caldria" gets you right smack in a jungle biome if interested.
edit2: If I were the thread poster, i would quote the post above me describing a seed with saplings in super flat, as long as it still works in 1.2.3
Anyway, I enjoyed trying the challenge.
