First, make sure you are the only person who has access to commands. Next, make sure you know how to change game modes. Finally, place bedrock above the chest. Because you are the only person who could switch to creative, you are the only person who could break the bedrock and access the chest.
The cat wouldn't work; people would just kill it, and it would lock you out.

Oh noes, someone destroyed the chest with their fist.
it's a LAN network. only people connected to your router can join that server. Local Area Network. that's that it stands for. so i doubt you will have random people going onto your server unless you have a public router or something at a hotel.
Ok you could put it in a secret place with some slab get and put items out and in it like a slab with or i mean for example put slab down then put a block then put chest then open and sotre tadda??
Easy, put everything you don't care about in the chest and leave all the things you care about on your person when you logout. Your best stuff is now safe from anyone in multiplayer.
There's no vanilla way to lock a chest. But you can use a bukkit plugin to lock them. Or you could make it really hard for the person to get to the chest by making a safe room out of bedrock and a redstone lock.

That's not how it works in vanilla Minecraft
I am ninja'd far too often.
Brilliant!
That's from the bukkit plugin, Lockette.
As stated before, just use ender chests to protect your stuff.
Like Boundegar said, just put a cat on top of it

Your best option is to put a block over the chest, but this is relatively useless if you don't have a protection.
Problem somewhat solved.
