I have made a mob farm which works in a wierd way and i dont understand why. So firstof all im going to include the pictures of my mob farm. It is well above ground. The netherrack which makes the tunnel where mobs fall is 22 blocks tall. when im at that little platform below the mob farm the mobs dont spawn at all. Now i made an "antenna" on top of the mob farm which is 20 blocks tall and like branches 14 blocks so it makes like a cube (saw this on an old video) and when im up there all the mobs spawn rapidly (like i was 30 seconds there and alot alot of mobs spawned) (which is good) now why dont they spawn when im below the farm. (i tried to go away from the farm from below and i was well over 24 blocks away like 1 mob spawns) why ddo the mobs spawn rapidly Only when im above it.
Edit: The mobs do spawn when im below the farm. But like 1 mob every 30 seconds. When im above they spawn like 30 mobs every second.
Edit2: I have to clarify when im above the trap im walking on the antenna up there.
Is your little platform more than 24 blocks below the floor where the mobs are supposed to spawn?
They won't spawn if you aren't more than 24 blocks away.
How far above the ground are you when you try to get mobs to spawn when you are below the farm?
You want to be more than 128 blocks away from anywhere that mobs can spawn outside your farm, the surface if it isn't lit up, covered with slabs, water etc or daytime and caves below it if they aren't lit up or have the floor covered with water, slabs or such.
Is this in single player?
On servers mobs can spawn near other players cutting down on the efficiency of your farm.
As far as I can tell you've basically answered your question yourself

My platform is on y = 155 (where i stand and want to kill the mobs) so i think its high enougn. I am playing on a server but im the only one in it (the server i play with my friend, hes currently offline). I do think im 24 blocks away from it when im on my platform cuz the red tunnel is 22 blocks high (so when mobs fall the dont die and i get xp when i kill them) I tried getting away from the farm like 30 blocks away and still nothing spawns. But when im above it alot of mobs spawn like alot but i dont wanna go up and down the whole time
> From player position to 24m (blocks) mobs will spawn 'normally' (ignore the distance of 16m - that's for mob spawners in dungeons etc)
- your antenna is 20 blocks away so you're within the normal mob spawn border
> Outside of the 24m distance 'Mobs spawn randomly', which I'm guessing you are since
- your netherrack is 22 blocks long
- you have a 1 block cobble at the bottom of drop
- 1 block distance (where the 1/2slab is)
- 1 block distance (chest level)
so 22+1+1+1 = 25mtr, meaning you are just outside the 'Randomly mob spawn' limit
I would guess if you stood on a small pillar of ~2 blocks higher up your spawn rates would improve.
So i made a pillar 2 blocks tall and everything was quiet for like 4 minutes. then some started dropping. After that i had to get down to kill them they continued to drop for like 30 seconds then everything quiet again. But when i go to the antenna and chill there for 30 seconds and come back down there are like 7 mobs down there already.
Y = 155 minus 128 is Y = 27 so unless you're playing a superflat world you should have at least 40 blocks worth of height for mobs to spawn in caves if you haven't lit them up or otherwise spawn proofed them.

1. CannonFoddr post is totally wrong. You MUST be more than 24 blocks away for mobs to spawn.
2. Y=155 in nowhere near high enough. It extends mob spawn range down to Y= 27, which is too deep even over deep ocean biome. You want your kill platform to be at least at Y = 175 over ocean (more in v13+ cause of drowned), and at least 192 over land.
Your top 'antenna' is around Y 200, which places surface way out of spawnning range.
You either need to move your farm about 40 blocks up, or you need to find and light up every cave down to depth 27 in a 90-block radius under your farm.

Okay thanks! ill try to light up everything below if it doesnt work i guess im off to dissasembling everything lol!

If you look at the Wiki Spawning page you'll see a picture of Spawning distances

So i should go up like 30 more blocks or?
No, no, no!
From the player position to 24 blocks away NO mobs will spawn (except from cagespawners).
From 25 to 32 blocks away mobs will spawn and will continue moving indefinately and won't despawn.
From 33 to 128 (127?) blocks away mobs will spawn but only move for a while before locking up and just standing still while they gradually despawn.
More than 128 blocks away they instantly despawn (and I believe in the latest versions won't spawn at all).
Just testing.

also you only needed an 'antenna' in some old versions, that's long since outdated.
i know but it worked lol
