Just popped to the nether for a look-see and as the 'entering nether' text appeared there was an explosion and my portal lost its purple haze so I have no way of returning home. Blocks are floating so something blew it up. I am playing in survival, alone on normal (not now as had to go to peaceful to survive being shot at).
The last time I went to the nehter on normal I was attacked by multiple mobs as I entered! Don't seem to have a lot of luck entering the nether on anything but peaceful. Is there any way to return home with no flint & steel or do I need to die to get back?
You had the unfortunate luck to have your portal spawn in an open area that ghasts could see you in. They shot you, and since you were standing in the portal the fireball shut off the portal. Let it shoot you again to relight, once lit cover up the outward sides with netherrack (or nether brick if a fortress is really close by).
The netherrack can be destroyed by ghast fireballs, so only use it as a temporary measure until you get some cobble, stone, or other similarly ghast-proof block.
You can find the ingredients to craft a Fire Charge in the nether, and that can be used to relight the portal. Or you could find iron ingots in Nether Fortress loot chests and get flint from gravel (to craft a flint and steel). You may even be able to find a flint and steel in a loot chest.
So you're not stuck there (not permanently, anyway). The portal can be relit.
And if the mobs you were mobbed by last time were Overworld mobs that means that you didn't have your portal in the Overworld properly fenced in and lit to keep mobs from using it. If mobs go through your portal when you aren't in the Nether they are in Limbo since the chunks in the Nether aren't loaded so they don't despawn.
Thanks all. My portal is in a basement and it is lit pretty well but may need to check that. As for flint and steel, I will have a look in the nearby Fortresses although I have raided them before. Not sure I want to enable normal mode to encourage ghast shots as I don't have a shield and the mobs in the nether are pretty scary!
I do remember seeing a skeleton as I entered the nether so most likely do have a lighting issue by my portal. Will sort that upon my return after I find another fortress for the iron!
Ghast fireballs are easy to dodge, particularly if you are able to see the ghast as it's shooting at you (the tricky ones are the ones you can hear nearby but can't see, because they're over your shoulder behind a small outcropping above your portal). The hard part is getting everything lined up so that the blast lands on the portal frame.
There are no hostile mobs in the parts of the nether outside of a fortress, which means even with all the messy lava spread around, the endless lava oceans to jump into, and the fatal falls into the fiery void...the Nether is something like 40% safer than the overworld.
Ghast fireballs can lit your portal to reactivate it. Make a ghast fire a fireball at you so he hit your portal bottom frame when you dodge the fireball.

Good news! Managed to find a flint & steel in one of the fortresses I already looted so returned home. Back to the nether for repairs and to prevent further ghast blasts, lighting around the portal and a chest of readies just in case.
Many thanks for the good ideas, food for thought some of them.....
Quick update! Managed to get home after finding a flint & steel in an already looted fortress. Left it there when i originally looted it as didn't need it at the time. Thak god for that!
Repaired portal area after getting home, left a chest with alsorts in just incase.
Not naturally, but at least in the past zombie pigmen could summon reinforcements just like regular zombies could. There was a chance that instead of a pigman it would be a regular zombie (zombie villagers included, but that might only have been due to all the zombies being variants). Not sure if this survived the Eggening that separated all the mob variants into their own spawn eggs.

Just testing.

Zombies don't spawn in the Nether and skeletons only spawn in fortresses so any that aren't in or next to a fortress must have come from a portal.
(Baring bugs and glitches but I don't think they are likely.)
Good luck!
