Unfortunately, I'm stuck on a mushroom island (hence the title). It started out as a small journey to a village, but it became a long adventure. I'm not actually completely stranded on the island, but I need to find a way to travel back and forth from the island, through some villages, and my main base without taking what feels like forever. I want to go back and forth because I might set up some bases there later on, and I also put down a chest in a desert right next to a village because my inventory was full. I have created a portal to the Nether in that same world before, so I can use the Nether for fast travel. However, my diamond pick is almost destroyed, and I don't have any spare obsidian I brought. Fortunately, I had brought wood with me on the adventure, so I don't have to cross the sea just to get wood. Because my diamond pick was almost out, I had to start from scratch with a wooden pick, upgrading to stone, then iron, then diamond. I am currently on an iron pick - I'm not ready to mine obsidian. When I do find diamond, the first thing I am going to do is craft a diamond pick and mine enough obsidian to build a portal to the Nether. But here's the hard part - The Nether is extremely dangerous to travel in. I can't seem to navigate through the Nether without getting blown up by Ghasts or falling into lava.
Hopefully, you have the coordinates to your house written down somewhere. If you do, great. Take your current position in the Overworld, subtract the X and Z coordinates from the ones of your house(or vice versa, depending on your situation) and divide by 8. That is how many blocks you have to travel to get back home. As for the actual journey, find yourself an Enderman, get some pearls. You could block glitch into the top of the Nether, where there are literally no obstacles between you and your destination. It's just an endless plateau of bedrock. No mobs will spawn, either.
Hope this helped!
For starters, since you're experienced (I assume) you should know that you can make cobble shacks to protect yourself from ghasts. Also, I've played the Xbox version and there you can hit the fireballs back at the ghasts. But I'm a newbie to PC version, so it might not apply on the PC version.

He called himself the Ruler of the Undead. Some say he still walks among us. As a Ruler of the Undead, it seems logical. His hair is long and gray, with a chiseled nose and jaw.He is tall and thin, with striking bold eyes.He always walks with his bow ready at hand.He is a fine sewer, many would not expect this from an undead ruler. He was a very descriptive man.

All of what you said was correct for the PC version.
Any tips on navigation through the Nether?
