You don't need signs to make arm rests on a chair. Just place any amout of stairs, then place stairs sideways at the edges. If they are faceing the right side, they will look like arm rests. If they are facing the wrong side, well, they won't look like arm rests. I think they should be facing inward. It looks better like this, in my opinion.
my first "house" is often made of dirt blocks and planks. the example looks way better because at least it's consistent
