I've been getting back into minecraft pvp survival lately, but I haven't played for the last several updates.
I usually dominate survival servers and create an incredibly powerful kingdom, but I think the rules of the game may have changed. I traditionally built a 16x16 1 chunk occupancy going from bedrock to sky limit. This chunk is entirely surrounded by 2 layers of cobblestone on the 17th and 18th layer and on the 19 a layer of lava or water. On the encompassing 8 chunks there is faction protection.
Would this be safe enough if absolutely no openings are available? Suppose the only way to get in without breaking blocks was teleporting, how about then?
Safe from what? If players can build it, players can break it. But to be safe from mobs, one dirt block is enough.
Players of course. I live on a mushroom island so there are no mobs. I'm building this for pure strategy, but the server allows for protected land so obviously there are possibilities of near perfect defenses. Having been successful in raiding almost every fortress I've ever come across, I know whether or not something is safe.
If protected land is possible, just make solid walls, ceilings, and floors out of obsidian, with an iron door that has no button, lever, pressure plate, etc. And the player has to place a lever to get in. That way, only players that can place blocks in that area can get in, without the need to always carry a diamond pick.

This.
However, be wary - if your server has an enderman farm, there is nothing safe. With enough enderpearls you can tunnel through walls inch by inch, and if you have fire resist to defend you from lava they try to place in the walls, and a respiration helmet for water, then you can get through any wall (regen and instant health may be necessary if it is an extremely thick wall).

Yes, I'm glad you brought that up. Though it seems impractical to use all of that health regen for mining through walls. But there does exist a glitch where you can teleport to a layer above you if manage to find an abandoned tunnel underneath the fortress. This is why it is necessary to mine to bedrock.
Unfortunately, there's no real effective way to prevent players from entering your home. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to create a floating island coated in lava to prevent people from getting in, and having the only way to get in be a hole in the bottom. Upon using an Enderpearl to get up through the bottom, you can set up a tripwire to be set off to close pistons to the entrance, causing you to land safe and block the entrance.
If you're really competent with Redstone, you could essentially block the entrance with lava/dispensers as well when the tripwire gets set off. The only inconvenience is that lava takes a while to dissipate, and you'd have to reapply the trap every time you enter your house. Your house will also be vulnerable while not around, since you'd want to keep your entrance available.
That's only a theory that came to mind, I'm sure there's a flaw with it. Nothing can completely prevent someone from entering, but if I play on a PvP server or with my friends, I simply like to coat my house in lava, and have a 2-block entrance concealed that only I know the location of. Using signs and waters, I immediately stop burning and can enter safely. Make sure no one is around, though.
I don't believe there is anything such as an "impenetrable fortress" in minecraft, however I am currently in the process of building a multi layer 16x16 size castle, around that castle is a moat 8 block across along with an outerlayer of a 20x20 multilayer cobble stone wall surrounding the outer part of the land and within that another 19x19 layer of a cobblestone wall protecting my kingdom...if i was done i'd have a picture of it but Im pretty sure my house is protected, for the outerlayer...i'll probably have to rebuild that once a creeper blows up
Over 90 % of the human population is stupid (in my honest opinion). Don't expect too much from them when you post something that actually involves thought.
I don't play on servers much but I'd say the best fort is no fort and if you have to keep things in a chest somewhere then make it an ender chest since I'm guessing they're tied to the player directly and not a public inventory space. I'm assuming vanilla minecraft however with a basic understanding of how enderchests might work.
I'm currently building the structure detailed in the OP. There are no mobs since it is in a mushroom biome, and my only risk so far is players finding me,
There is no penetrable fortress, even though strength and power cannot gain access, the power of the mind can. I'm saying that anyone with a traitorous mind can get in, sadly. But, like said earlier, a floating cube covered in lava with no entrance is a good way. Why no entrance? The creator of the OP is playing on a factions server, he can protect the lava cube and keep anyone out, and easily get in with /f home or /home.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

QUite a long time ago i was part of an clan which owned an Mushroom island, with protected lands and such. We litterally had made
an impenetrable fortress out of it noone could pass. We had to endure constant attacks of an otehr certain clan because we had the
only mushroom biome on the server. In the end tehy started to bombard our land and defenses from afar with TNT cannons, tried
to find underground and otehr entrances. But most of the time the TNT cannons have been the only way to get in for them.
We later found out that tehy had cheated themself stacks upon stacks of TNT in in order to be able to break in.
I had quite a fun time neverless to take all those TNT cannons down.
There are endless possibilities to get in even through protected areas. Preferable glitching through or going all around the defence.
As long as you dont have an cube shaped sealed box oc bedrock you are not 100% safe. Adn even then someone can glitch through
when he knows his job and what to search for.
The only real defence against them in an pvp server is staying unseen. That however proves difficult when the opposing team uses x-ray.

"Really though, it shows the mindset of a Dwarf Fortress player that when running for you life from a 30-foot tall animate bronze colossus, your first reaction to a horde of fluffy bunnies is to grab some and throw them at it." - DF player
Can the wither blast through water protected blocks?
On a side note, my giant 16x16x256 tower is almost complete. I plan on adding a secondary layar just for safe measure, but should I coat it with lava or water? It's on a server, and I don't know whether or not I will experience severe lag for some reason or another.
all explosive were neutralized upon contacted with water so wither can't explode your fortress, and then wither can break obsidian using their blue wither skull cannon
And maybe to make an protected entrace for teleporting using enderpearl you may also want to use wooden button and arrow in somewhere else that not to far away and you can take back the arrow from an tunnel, that may be taking some redstone circuit and pistons

Fortunately I am able to get enderpearls through other players or shops. I am also able to teleport myself inside with commands.
I have a new issue though, what about the Wither Boss? Suppose someone spawned one of those suckers right next to my base, what would I expect?
