I'd go with extreme hills so I can find a hill and build a tower to watch the world. Also, islands work out because they're small, mostly flat, and easy to work with.
Hmm, I would have to say extreme hills... Especially because you can just flatten out a mountain and then make your house on top of it, also depending on the size of the mountain you might be able to make your farms or other needs you may require on top of your mountain base. It also seems to give me the sense that my surroundings are clear because the mobs are all under my mountain that I have well lit up. I sometimes like to build in the dessert for the pharaoh ethic or egyptian feel.
Where I happen to spawn. I can adapt to any biome, and if there are insufficient resources, I leave a block of some sort at my spawn point. When I have all I need to get more, I go back. Then I build a house.
I like being able to use a compass to find my house.
I like to build near several biomes where they "converge." If that's not a viable option, then I try to build in Extreme Hills, Ice Plains (if I have enough seeds before I build), Desserts, or if I have to, Extreme Plains. I do prefer Extreme Hills so that when I build on top of a hill, I get a very nice view of the surrounding area AND I don't have to worry about dem creepers from a few angles.
I love the place. Especially if it's next to a desert, with perhaps a nearby forest to deforestize....

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
The plains and the beach are my ideal building spots. Forests, while they have wood, is a pain in the behind to build in because of all the freaking leaves that are left over when you cut the tree down.
Plains. Flat for building, Grass and water for crops, lots of animals, chance of a village, watch the sunset/rise, and great views if you're next to other biomes.
