I was thinking about what to do next in Minecraft, since I've been getting bored of recent gameplay. Then I remember this challenge, and why not get back to it?
However, I just don't ever see enough endermen in my world to justify the basis of the challenge, as far as mobs are concerned. (It's also much too easy to place a little dirt and get the endy to noob-rush you while unable to hit you.) I would rather make all the mobs scarier and keep the construction rules as a protection against all the Things That Go SSSsss in the Night, or add something so deadly, so horrifying to the game, that I'm legitimately scared to leave my tower or go into a cave. Slenderman seems obvious, and there's a mod for that, but I've just never been a fan of Slendy. Anyone have other mod ideas?

You could have a friend play on LAN with you, and while you try to complete the challenge, he flies around in creative spawning endermen.
I'm sad that this thread hasn't been posted in in a while. Anyways, I'll be getting back into the habit of posting pretty soon - I've been perfecting my mob farm. You can expect a post about it soon.
Meanwhile, I've crafted 5 diamond pickaxes in an attempt to get fortune III. I've gotten Silk touch twice, one of which also has unbreaking and efficiency, and the others are just effeciency/unbreaking. It's getting kind of frustrating grinding to level 30 on the grinder and parkouring up to the mage globe just to not get it. Anyways, wish me luck (fortune, haha) on my next enchant
The mob grinder, new and improved:
The mob grinder from before had some flaws, mainly: Mobs at the back of the crushing room were unreachable, only a few mobs could fit in the room at a time, spiders would hardly ever get in the trap, and most importantly, the crushing room was in a place where standing there would prevent many mobs from spawning in the trap.
First thing I did was move it back so that the crushing room was far enough back to let mobs spawn on most of the spawning platforms. I also put a viewpoint in the tube.
Here's the crushing room itself. I realize that I didn't actually show the inside and the mechanics, but I can upload that later if anyone really wants to see it. Levers from top of the picture to bottom: Crushing levers, Access levers (so I can get inside if absolutely necessary), Door opening lever (piston doors farther back in the transport tube that close so that more monsters are prevented from coming in). Hoppers help pick up items.
It can fit a theoretically infinite amount of monsters in it now - the monsters are dropped into the crusher from above instead of just flowing straight into it as they were before.
Ah, 1.7. The crusher (and fists) can't kill witches, they keep drinking health potions.
The spiders were clogging up the trap, so I created an alternate route for them to follow.
When they were clogging up the trap, I had to open the maintenance hatch and kill them manually... And, inevitably, a creeper would explode, and, just my luck 10 times out of 10 it would be in the millisecond that it was bouncing above the water. I've been reduced to a half heart on multiple occasions. Playing on hard mode it's a wonder that I didn't die several times.
The common area - finally!
So, I've been taking absolutely forever on this stage, and part of it was because of tower planning. I came to realize that I couldn't fit every single room in my tower as is - and some of the rooms would be too big. I recently decided on a final tower layout accounting for all rooms I'll ever build. Anyways, I built the common room where the old storage room used to be, and I moved the location of the new storage room from the globe (which is a pain to get up to) adjacent to the common room.
The improved storage room
The new storage room can be accessed by pressing a hidden button in the common room's fireplace...
Which temporarily closes a set of pistons, pulling back part of the wall (the niche to the right in the picture above, seen in the picture below from the other side)
The new storage rooms, with room for expansion later on. It's much more compact, using the technique of putting chests and trapped chests together to skip the gap that is normally in-between the chests.
Here is the location of the storage rooms seen from the outside (farm viewpoint):
Stuff:
Getting ready for the meat requirements for the next stage as I've been relying primarily on carrots for food.
The endermen have been attempting to sabotage my farm.
My filter for the water source inside the tower seems to be working.
(just a note if other people are having the same problems with opening spoilers as I am: press "esc"/cancel the page loading and it will open, just make sure you give the images inside time to load)

Well, I for one haven't been playing Minecraft lately.

If you're using diamond pickaxes to try to get your first Fortune III, you're doing it wrong. D: Iron has a higher enchantability level than diamond, so you'll get Fortune III easier that way, and iron is much more plentiful, and you're not 'losing' any iron by mining the ore pre-Fortune like you are any diamond ore you've already broken. Though most of the enchanted diamond picks you're making are still great for general mining.

Really? I thought it was gold that had higher enchantability... Well, if you're right, then I'll be good to go for digging out my underground wheat farm at least...
I'll try a few iron picks, I'm not short on experience sources with my mob farm and a couple priests selling experience bottles.
Thanks :} If you have the free time I would definitely recommend giving it a shot. I've had the most fun playing this than I've ever had in Minecraft.

Gold does have a higher enchantability, but getting a Fortune III gold pickaxe really isn't gonna do you much good, is it? ;P
This is my most favorite challenge on the forums. I've read the entire first post twice but I've had really bad chances with actually doing this challenge. My sister and I played this challenge three times and each world got corrupted after the second or third hour.
So um, I remembered I started this challenge about a year ago.
In case anyone's wondering, I'm still doing it, although really slowly. XD Also, you guys should know I've discontinued my fanfiction, which I'm pretty ashamed of. I don't think I'll keep writing until years from now thanks to my lack of knowledge - if I had been more far-sighted a year ago I wouldn't have written it at all. I think this challenge is too awesome for low-level writing.
What?! I was waiting for your next update. I love that fanfic, it's one of my favorites. Well anyway, thank you for reviving this thread. I've wanted to but I didn't have the guts to necro an amazing yet old thread. Now many of the newer forum users can enjoy the greatest challenge I have ever heard of, including my own.
I wrote out a whole post but I couldn't upload the pictures because for some reason I can't use imgur to load images... I'll try to reupload them a later time.

...Oh. O.o Goodness, I can't believe how many people seem to love this. But maaaaybe I'm going to update in a couple of months since I spent ages planning the storyline and I feel bad for leaving my readers. XD
Meanwhile, my progress for Stage Three is going more smoothly than I anticipated.
I swear someone is hacking my account, logging in, and unfollowing me from this topic every so often just to screw with me.
It's SO annoying.
Also, I need to ask something (I will assume for the sake of progress that the answer is "yes" if I don't get one): Am I allowed to have offshooting towers? For instance, right now I can't really think of a way to expand my current main tower without making major (time consuming) changes to it, so I'm planning to have several different towers shooting out of the hill behind my main tower. They would be connected to the main tower and not accessible from anywhere else to comply with the building rules (even if the rules weren't there that's still how I would do it anyways). So far, this all complies with the building rules, so I guess the big question is this:
Do I have to circle the perimeter of all the towers with the outer wall or does the outer wall only have to be around the main tower?
However, I just don't ever see enough endermen in my world to justify the basis of the challenge, as far as mobs are concerned.
