Here are some pictures of my survival island world and the underwater structure I have created. The question is, what do you think would look good in this thing? I already have a furnace system and a level 30 enchantment table.
Due to the slowness of swimming up the water, a spiral staircase along the outside of the room would definitely be a plus. The walls seem a bit lacking in decoration, and one of the main perks about being underwater is it gives you quite a nice view depending on the lighting. If you've already dug into the ground, and the base is below the ocean floor, you can either terraform the surrounding seabed to match the depth of your base, or you can simply use paintings and decorative blocks to give your base a more homely feel. Another good idea would be to expand the base in each direction, giving you a bit more of an open air feel to the main room without the clutter that comes from having piled all your stuff into it. After this, its usually pretty fun to link all sorts of automated farms to a single collection point (automated via hoppers) that will allow you to easily collect each material from a different chest, or perhaps to simply have the farms link directly to a main storage room.
Everything you need. I have seperate domes for: Sugar cane farm, nether wart, grain and potato gardens, chicken autobreeder, clock mechanism for sugar carm farm and chicken autobreeder, storage, enchantment room, brewing room, portal room, map room with maps of the surrounding islands, a fishing pool and a moon pool for exit. I still need a tree farm, a trophy room, a beacon room, an item sorter and a proper place to live, with sleeping room, decorative pool and plants (mainly in marble).
For the room you already have, I'd suggest a high walkway seperating a lower and a higher level. Expand the furnace to include a rack for faster smelting, and a large number of chests to have room for everything, sorted. You might even want to make this your dome specifically your item sorter, it looks about the right size. Add in a railway down to your mines, and you are set to go.
Inspiration: Make a lot of small domes instead of a large one. It gives a much interesting base. This picture is pretty old, I have added several domes since then.
Maybe that large dome can be the center and you can create smaller ones branching off from them. The one you built could be the entrance then each dome could be for something needed (ie farms, storage etc) like mentioned above. And I agree about the staircase. You will get annoyed with swimming up after awhile.

Wow, thank you guys for all the awesome suggestions! My base goes down to the sea floor, but the floor is level with it. So windows might be really cool actually! I will also start to build that staircase around the outside like mentioned. Then to start automating some farms!
I would suggest a garden around the central water pillar. Adding some trees and and grass would not only improve the aesthetics of your base, but also provide an additional source of wood.

(Apologies for the stretch.)
I think that's an awesome idea to add OP. It'd give a nice aesthetic to the place as well as being somewhat useful as you could use them (or convert them) into exit areas to the surface.
Try lots of towers connected by tons of glass walkways.
Add a walkway ringing around the inside halfway up, it stops the walls looking so boring.
Also, the whole point of building underwater versus underground is for the nice view. Add tons of big glass windows so it doesn't feel so, I dunno, closed in like underground.
One word - (OK, two words) - LAVA TRENCH. Simply for aesthetics of course but it would be nice to be able look out a large window and see the sea floor with a long (glass covered) lava trench stretching out in the distance.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I'll see if I can incorporate some sort of walkway, thanks for the thought!

Is this the walkway you were thinking of? It does make traveling easier! Better than that water tower..

I worked on this one a little bit, and plan on adding smaller windows with a cool looking lava trench going away from the island
I even tried to put a creeper face in the wall with glass and lava!
