Do you Minecraft guys and gals usually build a house or do you look for a cave and mine/dig a "hidey hole" within the first day of plain ole' survival? Please tell me below.
First day? Yeah, there's no time to build an actual house unless that's what you focus on.. I tend to focus on getting wood, stone tools and some food and then just dig a hidey hole.

That would be the smartest thing to do instead of wasting time building a house.
For me I never spawn next to a village, but instead I always happen to spawn in a jungle. By the way, good luck.
Well you don't have to spawn by them, you just look around, take your time, unless you are playing with difficulty.
Any time I load a random seed I try my best to stay in the desert or the plains. where they are found.
50/50 really. It varies in my case depending on my mood. I cant stick with one idea for long.

"Really though, it shows the mindset of a Dwarf Fortress player that when running for you life from a 30-foot tall animate bronze colossus, your first reaction to a horde of fluffy bunnies is to grab some and throw them at it." - DF player
Neither? I normally search for sheep while collecting food and wood so I can just make a bed and sleep in an open field before mobs start spawning. If that's not possible I'll build a small hut on the side of a hill to search for iron and coal while I wait the night out and tear it down in the morning and keep looking for a nice location
Need a good universal mob farm? Check out the Double Shift Towers. Designed for 1.9 and gets 22,000 Items / Hour with a very simple redstone set up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL8aoJpjjgU

Always dig. I'm not a big fan of making my base a normal "house." I like adding unnecessary redstone contraptions, and the walls of a house are just too confining. In the deep, ever-expanding underground is where I belong.
Cave: When don't have the resources to build a house
House: When you have the resources.
I usually am always exploring and on the go so houses aren't to good for me. You spend a lot of time making something only for it to be shorty abandoned.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.

That idea enables you to be flexible and have great contraptions to help you survive.

Baseball, then Minecraft.
I sometimes do the same thing or i'll build my house connected to the outside of the cave.

I might try that. Thanks for the idea.
I've tried that before and it works well but I always happen to spawn in a flat jungle.
