I don't have OCD. I never said I did. I said "kind of like OCD", because I "need" to clear out a cave, I can't just pass a cave that I haven't cleared out and forget about it. For the record, I have Asperger's Syndrome. And I don't think I can be arrested for claiming a mental illness on a minecraft forum, even if I did do so. Also, I don't play on peaceful. Playing on peaceful doesn't even change the terrain generator, so I would find the same stuff on peaceful as I would on any other difficulty level. I play on normal.
You still have hardcore mode to try before you can say the game is too easy.

Haven't tried it, but I might sometime. And I don't know if you read the whole OP, but it's not too easy in the sense that monsters aren't strong enough, but it's too easy because it makes acquiring iron way too fast. Yeah, it will be harder to mine the stuff on hardcore while dealing with the mobs and all, but the problem is still there.
Agreed, cave generation is rediculous now and definitly needs reduced a bit.
I think if they moved sea level to 96 instead of 64 and didn't increase the amount of caves generating it would help a bit.
If you increase sea level, what happens when ur in an old world and you head to the newly generated sections, a 32 block high annoying as F*** waterfall, or even, ur at sea level then a big mountain decides to spawn. No. just decrease the frequency of cave a bit, not too much.

That's a problem with ANY change to the terrain generator. Going between the old world and the new one will create the "cliffs of insanity".

Maybe have a different generator available then, like the large biomes one in the newest snapshot.
Anyway, OP, I agree. Once, I went mining, found a small cave. (or so I thought)
Turns out, it was HUGE. I left with FIVE stacks of iron ore. FIVE. Didn't even know what to do with them, so I made an iron sword statue.
I'm an avid miner when I play survival. more often than not, when I'm simply collecting coal or another ore, I'll dig through a wall to another cave. in one of my older maps, I have a cave system that actually bores me to go through it.
I setup base near a surface ravine I found in that world, and started to explore it once I had my stone tools. within 20 mins I was wearing a full set of iron, had all iron items, and spares sitting in a nearby stock chest. in an hour, I had connected this ravine to a long series of caves and caverns, a few dungeons, various diamond finds, a few smaller underground ravine, and had dug more than enough obsidian to get to the nether.
I remember when getting that diamond pickaxe(or hell, even iron) took either a lot of luck or a lot of work. now, I usually have an entire chest of smelted iron(and only god knows how much coal/redstone) within a few hours of playing. the game has steered away from the exploration/adventure side and focused more on the building side. this, in all, isn't that bad of a thing; just, i would prefer to feel my finds are worth something. it's so easy now that stone tools are obsolete within minutes of gameplay, i still use stone tools in my much older game version maps.
I really should update my mod, I enjoyed the game more when I used it.
I think that the cave generating is fine. However, something that does bother me about caves is the shape they generate in. Having caves intersect 12 times in one area is just annoying and makes for a terrible looking cave. I wish they generated more uniformly.
I'm having a similar experience: Massive cave system, all connected, confusing, and stretching for what feels like forever. I've been exploring the same system for most of a Minecraft year, and there doesn't seem to be a foreseeable end anytime soon.
I had a cave system alot like that under a little town on my server. It lagged so bad and i always got lost. I know what you mean though there are too many caves.
Wait till you try it with the new snapshot where single player games run on servers like multiplayer.
I agree with the OP. Too many caves. But there's something worse and it's already been mentioned - too much ore. Iron, redstone and even coal, are way too abundant. That's what makes it too easy. All ores (except diamond and gold) should be decreased by at least 50%.

It's not really that there's too much ore, there are just so many caves that it gives you the illusion of there being too much ore. All you have to do to find ore quickly is walk through caves and mine the exposed ore veins in the walls, which are very plentiful.
I don't know why, but there are way way way too many caves.
Sorry to start with an image post, but here you go.
I don't recall there being this many before 1.8.
There's about the same amount.
I like exploring caves, and it's cool to navigate the enormous mineshafts. But only to a certain point.
Valid-ish point.
After spending hours and hours in a seemingly endless cave system, it just gets boring and repetitive. Now you might say "If you're bored with the cave, just leave".
Take breaks. Try coffee.
But the thing is, if I see a new area of a cave that I haven't explored yet, I can't rest until I've gone in and lit the whole thing up, and taken all the ores out of it. It's kind of like OCD, I just can't let it go.
I recommend therapy. But is it that important to explore caves?
The cave system that I've been in since I started this world 3 days ago is just way too big. I dug a staircase mine type thing for a bit, just to collect a few ores to get me started.
You probably don't want to do this, this tends to be a bad idea.
Within about 5-10 minutes I found my self in a cave system. 3 days later, I'm still in the cave system. I've seen about 3 ravines, destroyed 2 cave spider spawners, gotten lost in 2 different abandoned mineshafts and maybe 20 different caverns. I have half a chest full of coal, and the other half is iron, gold and a few diamonds.
But that's good!
IT NEVER ENDS. I once dug into a coal vein, and there happened to be yet another cave system on the other side of it, which is just as vast as the one I'm in already. It's getting ridiculous.
Just take a break. It's not that difficult.
How does it make the game too easy? Well, I can just walk around or dig for 10 minutes, find a cave system, and walk out 10 minutes later with a stack of iron and 3 stacks of coal. There's no point in mining anymore, and in fact, mining would just be disrupted because you would hit caves every few minutes.
Accordingly, this is still good.
Caves and ravines aren't special anymore, they're just annoying now. I look in my chest of coal and iron, and it just feels wrong. I'm not proud of having so much resources, because it doesn't feel like I actually worked for them. All I did was accidentally find a cave, and now I have more resources than I'll ever need.
You took your time to go and mine them.
So what can I do with all this iron? Making minecart tracks is useless... All I have to do is go down into the cave system and break the tracks in the mineshaft. So that's not an option.
Make blocks and make a secret laboratory or something underground.
One cave leads to a mineshaft. The mineshaft leads to a ravine and a few other caves, the ravine leads to even more caves and another mineshaft which leads to more caves and another ravine, and all these caves lead to more caves, and more ravines, and more mineshafts which lead to more and more.
Still good.
What do you think about the abundance of caves?
I don't have a problem with it. However, [insert my signature here.]
It may be "good" to have lots and lots of ores, but I don't feel like I worked for them. My problem is that it's now just way too easy to get them. And the amount of caves is NOT the same amount as before 1.8 (Well it might be the same actually, but they're all connected together now, which makes them practically never-ending and stupidly easy to get ores).
You still have hardcore mode to try before you can say the game is too easy.
I'm finally back. See profile for details.

I never seem to find lots of iron. Heck, I barley get enough minerals to survive now.
(Yes I'm kidding.)
I don't get it...
How long did it take you to get that, and what version was your world created with?
Wait till you try it with the new snapshot where single player games run on servers like multiplayer.
