Although I don't recall people actually doing experiments involving travelling North as far as possible and then calculating the angle made by the sun and the horizon (which is too awesome for words), I'm pretty sure the sun stays at roughly the same position in the sky all the time. This would imply that the Minecraft world actually curves inwards, like the inside of a (partial?) sphere centred on the sun/moon. But since we also have exactly the same image presented to our eyes by the sun and moon no matter what our position, the most likely possibility is that space itself is curved to present the same facade to us from any position on the surface. If we were allowed to go more than 64 metres above sea level (plus however high you can jump) we might run into some truly wierd stuff.
Your calculation are null and void because you forgot one very important factor... the world of Minecraft is flat.
No matter what velocity you reach the sun will never rise when you head west.

I always pictured the minecraft world as a giant cube.
Because it would make sense as there are no difference in the sun's angles when you move from place to place.
I did test it with 3 separate locations. Spawnpoint (Magnetic north according to this), north of the spawn... o.O and south of the spawn. (Although technically they'd both be going south...

Fair do. It would be interesting, unfortunately, the mechanics of the world mean the sun is always above you. This could suggest a large distance to a large sun (making its relative position appear unchanged).

We do not know that though. Everything appears flat if observed in isolation. A curve is nothing but a series of tangental points that lead onto each other (some may remember drawing circles with a series of lines on graph paper, where each line makes a slight inflection to the line until one gets a full circle). The size of the minecraft world that we may travel may very well appear flat, and additionally we may see it as impossible to change the time the sun rises (as in move to another time zone). However, this is simply that on a planet the size of a minecraft planet (assuming the 8x is a fraction of the sphere in accordance with above calculations) the speed required to move 1 second forward or back in the relative position of the sun is equal to the orbital speed, or its opposite. I do not think that our humble miner can reach that speed.
I am simply working a hypothetical. I like to consider the world of Minecraft as an insanely large planet, you choose to see it as a flat plane, some see it as a cube, I have a friend who jokes he sees it as a truncated icosahedron. To each their own.

You're blinded by Newtonian physics and our heliocentric solar system.
There's one very interesting possibility here that nobody's touched on yet.
The sun and moon are orbiting your Minecraft character. Think about it. Completely alone, on a seemingly endless world that has the consistency of tissue paper.
It's a solipsistic nightmare. You are the center of the universe. Everything rotates around you...the stars, the sun, the moon. You are alone. And you cannot die. You always come back. You have seemingly endless power to build incredible objects, but what does that matter? You are alone. Always alone.
I know what it is now. Minecraft SP is a digital recreation of Sisyphus.
Also, according to any compass, you always spawn at magnetic north. And the sun flies directly overhead. So that must mean that instead of spinning like a top (like earth), it rolls forward like a ball; north pole over south pole.
That would explain why there's no seasons.
The planet has to be tilted (like earth) to have proper seasons.
Okay then, these are rough calculations, and will be ammended if I recieve better information.
So here it goes:
There are 86400 seconds in a earth day (24x60x60)
Obviously, there is 1296000 seconds of measurement at equator of planet (360x60x60)
Therefore, there is 15 seconds of measurement to 1 second of time on Earth
There are 1200 seconds in a minecraft day (20x60)
Therefore, there is 1080 seconds of measurement to 1 second of time on the Minecraft world.
The chunks available in minecraft can be equal to 1080 seconds of measurement at the planet's angle of tilt (as the sun goes straight over world, it can be assumed that we are right on the angle of tilt to the sun and the moon)
The Minecraft world's available chunk is 8x size of Earth, according to most sources. Assume it as a circle, with it's diameter along the equator of the planet.
The Earth's circumference is 40,075.16km
Therefore minecraft chunk available is 320601.28KM in length
Therefore 1080 seconds measurement in minecraft is equal to 320601.28km
Circumference of minecraft world is 320601.28 x 1200 = 384721536km
As said above, day is 1200 seconds
384721536000/1200 = 320601280 m/s
So in short, the world of Minecraft is insane. It's orbital speed would, in all logic, cause major gravity related issues, and the sheer size of the planet, with multiple regions of tundra near the angle of tilt, along with deserts, forests, swamps and similar, suggest a highly unstable climate. The size of the sun in the sky of a planet this size makes one wonder how it has stayed in orbit, or even if it is in a habitable zone to begin with. If anyone can provide better figures, or fix up mistakes in my calculations, please do, as I would rather we get a good measure than a mediocre one.
The oddities continue. As PopRocks points out:
Also, according to any compass, you always spawn at magnetic north. And the sun flies directly overhead. So that must mean that instead of spinning like a top (like earth), it rolls forward like a ball; north pole over south pole.
So in elaboration of that, if the compass is to be trusted, the poles fall on the angle of tilt (your spawn is magnetic north). I am not yet sure how this would work with the rotation, as it would make things rather tricky with sun and moon (unless it has a weird orbital speed relative to rotational speed). I am not entirely sure how to factor in the compass with calculations, help in this matter would be appreciated.
tl;dr Minecraft world is huge, Minecraft planet is insanely huge.
Or the sun could revolve around the Earth(Minecraft). Makes sence, don't it?

It's hard waiting around for something that you know might never happen; but it's even harder to give up when you know it's everything you ever wanted.
The Minecraft planet would have to be round because of the sheer size and the fact that when an object is big enough its gravity pulls it into a sphere.

Maybe it's like in Dragon Ball Z, where the Saiyan planet has increased gravity, so the Saiyans are super strong. We can punch down trees and mountains, can't we?

Minecraft is not 8 times the size of Earth......
If it were then you could only travel around 32,000m in any direction from spawn, which is NOT true.
It's actually around 30,000,000m x 30,000,000m meaning its surface area is somewhere around 900,000,000,000km
That's almost 2000x the size of Earth's SURFACE area..
For all purposes you can go in any direction (nsew) from spawn (0,0) and travel 15,000,000 m until reaching the so called unplayable part of the game where the generator starts messing up or "the end of the world" if you may. In reality, the game becomes unplayable at around 13,000,000m from spawn. Anything over that is extremely laggy, buggy, and unplayable. The game starts messing up and the terrain is just pretty much just all plateaus and the block selection starts being off center.
It took FOREVER to take these lol (my position is 14,000,000, 14,000,000, 100)
Maybe the Minecraft world is just a virtual construct and the guy that you play as is simply the avatar (think The Matrix or Assassin's Creed). After all, the world is created as you experience it and so it has no definable shape!
OR, maybe it could be something crazy with a humongous surface area, but not super massive. Perhaps it has a rock crust that surrounds a huge gas giant. Maybe the outer crust and the inner gas giant have different angles of rotation as well?
I'm sure that 's probably not physically possible, but we're just talking about a game anyway so it's probably as plausible as anything else being discussed in this thread

You walked.... 14,000 kilometers? It takes me about a minecraft day (day to night to day again) just to go a kilometer (thanks to terrain). Even at a faster speed, say a kilometer every minute, that is still an awesome amount of time invested to get there.....
