Whenever I enchant a sword, and put a lot of levels into it, the last thing I want to see when taking it out of the enchantment slot is Bane of Arthopods. I don't want to seem whiney, but this enchantment only works on 3 kinds of mobs1 and even then, silverfish and cave spiders are uncommon encounters.
Does anyone else feel this way or am I alone with this opinion?

Every time I get a sword with bane of arthropods on it, no matter what sword it is, I throw it away without a second thought, "Bane of Arthropods" is the most trollsome enchantment to get when enchanting, just because its so godawfully useless, spiders, cave spiders and silverfish have very little health anyway, so they arent hard to kill without it.

Don't throw it away. Wait until you have two, and then at the very least, you can combine them (the old-fashioned way, without an anvil) to strip the enchantment and get another try. I mean if you're using diamonds or something valuable (maybe gold, I don't know how precious iron is in your world -- it's probably not worth it with stone or wooden tools :P). Or if you have old, nearly-broken swords that you didn't have other plans for (too expensive to repair in an anvil, for example), you could combine them with those and get two more shots at the roulette wheel.
Bane of Arthropods does only does bonus damage to 3 monsters, and so does something like smite - Except there's isn't much reason to attack zombie pigmen, so why is Smite better than Bane of Arth.? Smite is mostly helpful against skeletons, as zombies are fairly easy to kill in the first place, and I'd say spiders are more difficult to fight than zombies...
Plus, when I do encounter silverfish or cave spiders, I appreciate any help I can get - Especially in custom maps where combat with them is often much heavier.
Right, now I know bane of Arth. isn't the best enchant ever, but I can't help but to ask why some of you despise it so much. It's definitely not the best sword enchantment you can get, but why would you just throw it out? It seems like a waste to me.
it's not THAT bad, i mean, it's better than nothing, and like someone else said, smite is just as bad, spiders are a pain in the behind to kill normally because they're faster than you, zombies are easy, skelies won't hit you if you zig zag, but spiders will catch up to you if you're backpedaling while attacking them, so if i can kill them faster, great, also, as someone else said, when i see cave spiders, i want to kill them FAST, every little helps
Ive found that sprinting lets me get away from those silly herpy derpy spiderps.

Smite is better than Bane of Arthropods because zombies and skeletons are more common than cave spiders and silverfish and is therefore more useful, more of the time. It even works against the Wither boss. As for spiders being difficult to kill, myself and others don't see it that way. Bane of Arthropods is agruably the worst enchantment because every other enchantment is useful more often. Fire aspect, sharpness, looting work on every overworld mob (and with the exception of fire aspect, every Nether mob)- Bane of Arthropods does not.
I would say that Smite and Bane are the 2 worst enchantments, smite being slightly better than bane. I will never throw away the sword because I do like to try to use them for things like spider eyes and arrows. I love to brew and it seems like I never have enough arrows. It is of course not the best enchantment but it's better than nothing.
The reason smite and bane of arthropods suck is that they don't do much more extra damage then sharpness.
Sharpness adds an average of 2(1-3) damage per level, but smite/BOA only adds 2.5(1-4) damage per level.
To fix this, smite/BOA should add 3.5(2-5) damage per level.
Smite works on 2 'common' over world mods, the same should be the case for BOA otherwise it's worse then smite.
So BOA should work on creepers as well, making it around as good as smite.
Smite should also not work on bosses, neither should sharpness. Instead, you need to use the new boss slayer enchantment, dealing 4(3-5) extra damage per level.

I think that it is not the most useful enchant, but it is better than nothing.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

As of now, blocks have a random chance of being silverfish blocks.

I have used them before. Bane of arthropods with other enchants is still better than those enchants without bane of arthropods.
With a normal diamond sword, I can kill a spider with at most 3 hits... I get Bane of Arthropods IV and it still takes 2 to kill...
I would think Bane 4 on a diamond sword would make them evaporate just by waving the sword in the general direction...
Pff I 2 shot spiderps if I manage to crit them with either a Diamond sword or Iron sword.
