Idea
This is a challenge based around building and maintaining an NPC village. It might seem easy, but with new zombie mechanics, it can get difficult unless proper precautions are made. I found this challenge to be very entertaining, and I wanted to share this with others.

My brother and I (Coryn02) decided to try this challenge in 1.6.1. Around ¾ through the challenge, we decided to stop and make our own post (since the one we were following was outdated to 1.3.1) because we had found things that worked well and things that didn’t work so well.
Starting materials
1 Horse Egg, Chest, Lead, Fence Post (If you wish to spawn a pack mule/donkey)
6 Testificate Eggs (To start the village, of course)
4 netherrack and 1 flint & steel (This is for a communal fire pit)
A set of rations per player (8 bread, 6 porkchops, a fishing rod)
12 Emerald coins per player (to trade with villagers)
1 Bed per player (to set spawns after a long travel)
Global rules (These are in effect throughout the entire game)
Torches can only be placed within caves and on village structures. They may not be placed on the ground or on trees. Fence post torches are allowed on or within the village enclosure.
Furnaces must have stone chimneys that allow for venting and must be at least 3 blocks tall.
The villagers must be treated as civilized people. This means you cannot barricade them in their houses at night.
The game is over if less than two villagers remain. Or if you murder Packie.
You may not exploit NPC mechanics by building apartments or door structures.
Stages
Stage 1: Getting Settled
In this stage the player(s) must find a location to set up their town.
Location must have a water source (cannot be ocean or swamp) and cannot be underground.
(Optional) Pack horse must be tied to his post upon finding a location.
The communal fire pit should be set up in the center of the location.
Restrictions:
Before a permanent location has been set, no shelter may be built.
Mining is prohibited; anything that requires a pickaxe to harvest is off-limits.
Stage 2: The Beginning of a Village
In this stage the player(s) must establish a small settlement.
Build a house for each player; they may not look the same as NPC houses.
Build two houses for NPCs along with one extra for every player. (Two players would need to make 4 NPC houses).
Restrictions:
The NPC houses must have two doors. When all houses are built, NPCs must be spawned.
Stage 3: Sticks and Stones
In this stage the player(s) must create a mine and farms to supply and feed their people.
Two different crop farms must be established and have at least 20 plants growing each.
(Optional) A stable must be constructed for your pack horse. It must have hay bales to feed your horse.
A quarry or mineshaft needs to be excavated; it does not have to be in the village, but it needs to be nearby.
Cobblestone paths/roads need to be created; they must connect to all homes.
Have an NPC population of 6.
Restrictions:
Mining ban is lifted and a depth limit is set to 60; you cannot explore caves that delve deeper. You may check with F3 (depth is the Y value).
Mining tunnels must have support beams in place placed every 10 blocks made of fences and wood planks. They should look similar to abandoned mineshaft supports.
Mining tunnels must also be lit with torches.
Stage 4: Solid Foundations
In this stage the player(s) must solidify their town’s existence.
A granary and silo must be created; the granary is used to store food and the silo to store sand. Silo must be at least 10 blocks tall and filled with sand.
Player homes, NPC houses must be reinforced (if they are not already) with stone in some form (roof, fencepost supports, stone foundation). Floors should no longer be grass or dirt.
Create a paddock and establish an animal population of 8.
Create an aqueduct (running water source) near or in the town; line it with stone.
Have an NPC population of 10.
Restrictions:
Mining depth limit is now set to 40.
Stage 5: Specialization
In this stage NPCs must be allowed time to grow their talents.
A blacksmith’s workshop should be established; it must have at least 2 furnaces and an anvil.
A library should be established; it must have at least 20 bookshelves.
A Butcher’s hut should be created near the animal pen.
A town hall should be erected near the center of the city. It should be at least 15x15 blocks and have at least 4 rooms. One of these 4 rooms will be a meeting room.
Create an iron golem to defend the village (if there isn’t one already roaming around).
Have an NPC population of 14.
Restrictions:
Mining depth limit is now set to 20.
Stage 6: The Modern Testificate
In this stage the player(s) will be working to create more livable conditions.
Create a lighting system within the village; this means lamp posts!
Build a Cathedral to your Idol/God. This should be an impressive structure adorned with gems, etc… It should also have an enchanting book as your book of choice.
Build an outer wall around the village (if you haven’t already) with gates and watchtowers.
Restrictions:
There is no longer a mining limit
NOTE: Stage 6 may not be the last stage, I may come back and extend this later.
If you would like to submit your village here, feel free to do so. We would like to see what kind of villages/cities were created!
This is the first challenge I've ever seen that actually looks really fun and challenging. Might have to try this. And rage quit, lol
If you do try it, make sure to have a friend!
I tried the old version by myself and tried to set everything up on the first night. Everything went well until the zombies came. Quickly, I had amassed 20+ zombies that were all chasing me, all my swords had broken, and more were approaching.
The new zombie mechanics make villages very interesting, since they not only can see you from 40 blocks away, they can see villagers as well.

Tried this; Quite fun indeed. But when you said that the zombies were hard to fend off, you weren't kidding. They are so smart that they jumped off the cliffs near my settlement and over the fences. Needless to say, after a diamond-clad zombie showed up, I started to lose hope.
Unless you have,
A: a server with people on it who help you
B: an Iron Golem
or C: A killer defense mechanism...
You won't get far without dying. I'd recommend several swords in your hotbar at once.
Anyone going to dare me to try this hardcore mode?
EDIT: On another note, it is hard to get good food before farming, so get used to rotten flesh. If you can't imagine eating it, think of it as beef jerky.
I would make baby villegers and take them to a zombie and boom a baby zombie pet.
... You are a terrible person.
Not only that, but baby zombies are horrifying in this update, so without any armor or weapons you would quickly die and the little monster you allowed to form will proceed to murder every living thing in your village.

I've always thought baby zombies are horrifying, lol. So yeah, this.
And where's those screenshots! It was a double dog dare! A double dog!!
Wat, who is Packie? Is this supposed to be a GTA IV joke?
Packie is the donkey you spawn with, if applicable. I initially voted against this when Duck and I were figuring this out, but there was no stopping it. Packie was born.

I hereby double dog dare you to try this on hardcore mode.
And since it's a double dog dare, you can't back out. :3

Well, crap... I wasn't serious about that. But since you requested, I may put up a screenshot or two detailing my adventures. Wish me luck.

I haven't started yet. But I will now... Just don't expect regular updates from me. Tomorrow I am leaving for two weeks.

StairsGoingUpThendown I'm so clever.
Like this font?
Yes, absolutely!
Oh, I almost forgot. I played some of this just now in hardcore mode.
Inventory on first night:
More soon!

I see you already had to kill a zombie! Very nice, haha
I'm also known as TANNAR in some places.
There were about seven skeletons at one area, so I had to avoid those...
Amazing stuff ensues afterwards.
... Why, Packie? WHY?!
Well, I guess it's zombie jerky again...
... Well, at least I'm not bored...
Inventory on the second night. So far so good... Right?
