Hi! I am building a coliseum on a survival server made out of sandstone. sounds easy and fun, right? WRONG! I have to collect stupid amount of sand to build this coliseum, and I cant handle it anymore. so this is were YOU come in- what is the fastest waya to collect sand? diamond shovel, creeper explosions, what eva. I just need lots. and lots. of sand.
I have a very easy way thats somewhat automatic. Dig down in the desert to whaer the sandstone starts. Mine the block of sandstone and immediately place a torch where the block just was. All the sand above it will fall but when it hits the torch it will automatically brake. This saves time and diamonds!
I have a better idea, guys. How about digging a hole in the sand, getting underneath it, placing a torch, and mining out the block holding up the sand so that it all falls on the torch so you can collect it?
Enchant a diamond shovel with efficiency III, which will make the sand blocks break instantly. Then, hold down the mouse. When you move your mouse, the blocks will break instantly where you point at. The blocks will have no delay between breaking a block and starting to break a new one, so you can collect lots of sand in little time.
Fastest method I know is a moderately enchanted diamond shovel. It cuts through sand so quickly that you'd think you were in creative.
The above "place a torch below falling sand" method does work, but you still have to dig your way below the sand in the first place. If you have to dig anyways, I don't see any reason not to dig the sand itself.
the shovel works great, but to make sure you are not wasing shovels, and diamonds, enchant books until you have the one you want, and then combine them in an anvil
The way I get sandstone is to dismantle pyramids I've found. Not only do you get the obvious sandstone from the structure, but there's a fairly large chunk of sandstone that goes into the ground around the treasure room And then afterwards, you can work your way outwards, mining the sandstone, and getting the sand on top of it using torches.
Thought those broke in 1.3-1.4 might try it again.
I did too. And just to be clear I wouldn't personally use something like this myself, however I wanted to present the OP with a possible solution in case they wanted to.

Yeah it didn't work. I tried doing it but the my pistons were not going up then I realized the redstone was pulsing too fast. So I had to add 2 redstone repeaters on 2 ticks to slow the pulses. But even after a couple of minutes the sand refuses to go up. I call this Fake titling.
So I tried to have some fun.
Piller of FUN TIMEZ since i didnt do my pointless thing of the day
As you can see blocks only get destroyed by this contraption.
Find a stack of sand, dig the one on the very bottom, then quickly place a torch on the block below. Now as the stack of sand falls, it will be dropped as an item since it can't land where the torch is.
I'm also known as TANNAR in some places.
"Hmm... no diamonds here. Maybe I should look underground?"

I suggest finding a desert, you'll get sand and sandstone
At least it says it still works in 1.5...

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
