So i'm trying to make a trap to grind XP from zombies. According to minecraftwiki.net, a punch deals .5 hearts damage. Zombies have 11 hearts damage. Since the equation for fall damage is FD = (number of blocks - 3) / 2. Since I want the zombies to have a one hit kill with punch, then the trap should deal 10.5 points of damage. Plug this in and use simple algebra [ 10.5=(x-3)/2 ] and you get x=24 blocks.
I put this math into practice and actually built it. I built a trap that funnels zombies from a spawner into a "mobivator" that takes the zombies up and then drops them 24 blocks. It turns out this did not work. At 24 blocks every zombie dies. I shortened the drop by 1 bock (23) and only some survive the fall, the ones that do take 2 hits to kill. This confirms my math because if you plugged in 23 blocks to the equation you would get 10 hearts. I then shortened the drop one more and most zombies survive the fall but they take 2 or 3 hits to kill. I have checked my system countless times and I am sure they are not taking extra damage from drowning along the way.
Any ideas?
hmm...
A guy posted a thread about making a trap like that from a spawner. Your math is right, but MC must be glitchy. Make sure the mobs don't suffocate anywhere, that could be a problem.
The few that die I believe come from mobs jumping in the water instead of falling 23 they fall 24 blocks, at least this is what seems to happen when I've used this trap. If you need to help making a trap this link should help a bit, although the guy that made it something of a stitch. Word usage, personalty etc.
It sounds like you may be using this type of trap already if so try changing the difficulty from normal to hard or easy etc. I've found that it changes how hard it is to kill the mobs after they fall. honestly the best the thing to do is just experiment a bit with the diffulty level and height until you get it right I had to do this myself as well.
//edit: I've used this trap for skeletons, zombies and spiders, it works great for the first two, but not the spiders because they: 1 have less health, and 2 can crawl through a 1 and even a 1/2 block space. I've not tried this with spiders with a 1/2 corner block opening so that may work , but I kind of doubt it. I also like using str potions.
Since zombies have some armor I think you might have to use pistons to suffocate their health down instead of a fall, because as said above fall damage can not get them to .5 anymore.

Also you want to make sure that the water channel the pushes the mobs towards the drop ends 1 block before the edge. The other mobs will push each other over the edge. If the water runs right to the edge of the drop, the mobs jump and so they splat.
Also, as noted above, because Zombies now have armour, they will always require 2-3 hits to kill with a non-weapon. I have a Zombie grinder but gave it up and went and found a skellie dungeon, guaranteed one hit kill with a 23 block drop.

I did realize that after watching the video posted earlier, and made the change. It allowed it to drop 1 more block, but it's still a 2 hit kill
After research,
I found a contradiction.
Wiki says zombie armour was removed.i know nothing about how armour works, but it seems you cant 1 hit zombies after fall damage.
Try the fences. If that doesnt work, try having instead of the mobavator, make them go into a suffocation area- pistons push a block and suffocate them or a repeater based time.
Suffocation is 1 heart per second.
Depending on your diffuculty, youll screw around with how many repeaters to use.
I suggest having the zombies get pushed 8 blocks away, stop the current with a sign. Make them fall 2 blocks.
Set a button to activate a piston for say 5 seconds. The piston pushes a block into the zombies head space. After 5
Seconds, it retracts.
That is if u use 1 sticky piston. If no slimeballs,
Use 2 pistons. 1 is direcrly linked to a button, the other is linked to the repearer delay and pushes the block back after5 seconds. Try an rs nor latch.
One input te button the other is the end of the repeater delay. Hope this helps. I will post if i can sort this out.
I play on smp so ill ask what the difficulty is.

In the video, which I have watched about 5 times before, he mentions that the last block before the fall has to have no water on it. That can be done by placing a sign to stop the last bit of water. How this helps is that some zombies jump at the last second before the fall, and som don't. The zombies don't seem to jump if the last block before the fall has no water on it. After that, just see how many blocks down it takes (probably 25-26) for them all to be one hit killed.
Im on a server, with the EXACT same problem, so I have a chest full of stone swords at the collection zone, to get the zombies. Also you can use splash potions of healing to kill them in 1 throw.
To make the splash potions you first get water bottles, ad put them in a brewer.
Then you add 1 Nether Wart
Then 1 golden melon (Gold nugget and a melon slice in crafting bench)
Then you put in 1 gunpowder(to make it splash potion)
then just right click it on the zombies, and its kills all in 1 hit!

I definitely could, but I would like to just make it one hit with a fist

this will make it a 23.5 block fall as the fence counts for 1.5 blocks tall...
lmk if this works for you...

Yes, but a two hit kill with a cooked fish or loaf of bread is still pretty easy XP :smile.gif: But the zombie armour is why I switched to skeletons.
Well good thing i have 2 skeleton spawners underground I can try!
