I'm the kind of player that would rather build a mob farm than go out hunting mobs on foot, but I could use some tips on how to make my farm work well on Endermen. Going to the end to farm them is not an option here, because I need the ender pearls to get to the end.
I'd like to use fall damage to kill the mobs because there's less chance of losing items than lava traps, and I have a large ocean where I can build the trap with no dark land within 128 blocks.
Here are a few things that I know probably won't work:
Water - Endermen teleport when they touch water, their downward teleport range is unlimited, and they can teleport into lit up places, so there's no way to prevent them from teleporting into underwater caves short of finding and flooding them all.
Depending on mobs walking around - Mobs stop wandering after 5 seconds if the player isn't within 32 blocks, and I'd be at least 43 blocks away at the bottom to ensure that Endermen die from the fall.
The only two valid design options I've found so far are as follows:
Using pistons to push the mobs out of the trap.
Crushing Endermen first and then using water to flush out the trap.
Both of these options have downsides:
Both require a piston for every block of spawning space
The pushing design is difficult to scale because for every horizontal row away from the center you need 2 vertical rows.
The crushing design is only spawnable for a short amount of time in its cycle, endermen will not spawn when it's crushing (20 secs) or flushing.
So does anyone have a better idea? I think I'll settle on the pushing design if no one has a better design, while it is difficult to scale I don't see that is as big of an issue as wasting spawning time like the crushing design does.

I don't know how to make a good enderman farm, but I found a way to be able to find a lot of endermen. I created a mob grinder where mobs spawn on several 7x7 blocks and use water canels between them that lead to a lava blade. Right next to the spawn room, I had dug out a huge cavern where I could plant multiple trees. Because of the mob grinder next door, endermen kept teleporting into my tree farm, so I never had lack of enderpearls. After that, I created a 3-high hollow area above the mob grinder spawn room, with a lever and water, that would pour down on all of the spawning platforms. Whenever I turned that on, endermen would be forced to teleport either up there, or to my tree farm. (or somewhere else, but I would ususally get 1-2 to go to my areas each time).
Hope that helps! and good luck.

Err ... I suggest a normal enderman farm. This way normal mobs will fall to their death, but endermen will have 1/2 hearth left. Would be really slow though, and you should dig out a 16*16 room around the killing box, and fill it with halfslabs on the floor so they can't tp out.
@mcon1: That would only work if all the caves nearby were filled in or flooded an the farm was far enough below the surface. Otherwise the Endermen would teleport to the surface or other caves and you'd lose them.
@CaptnNorway: There's no need for this to be an XP farm, I don't expect enough Endermen to spawn for that to be worthwhile. I just want the ender pearls, so I can make it higher than 43 blocks and let the Endermen fall to their deaths with the rest. The biggest issue is actually getting Endermen concentrated from a large spawn area into a small drop zone efficiently.
@123nart:  I want the ender pearls so I can get to the end. Once I'm there, I'll have all the ender pearls I want. Also, there aren't any desert or plains biomes near me either (for some reason my area is entirely jungle, forest, mountain and ocean biomes), so there's no good place to hunt endermen even if I wanted to (and I clearly stated that I didn't).

Two options for you:
Option 1:
Step 1: Find zombie spawner
Step 2: Use it to purify two zombie villagers
Step 3: Start breeding them (this guide is very helpful: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1270377-village-mechanics-a-not-so-brief-guide/)
Step 4: Trade wheat for emeralds and emeralds for eyes of ender
Step 5: Kill enderdragon
Step 6: Make a much more productive farm in the End.
Option 2:
Build huge elevated mob farm that is spider-compatible (the endermen will take any half-slabs you try to place) and have them all fall onto a large flat pad where you run around picking up any enderpearls you see.
@JTTCOTE2: Steps 1-4 of option 1 sound interesting, though step 5 is rather obvious and I'm not sure there's much point to step 6. I might do it for the teleportation lulz but as I mentioned the current goal is getting to the end, not collecting ender pearls just for fun.
Option 2 is wrong in several ways:
A large flat mob farm would not work very well at all in current versions because mobs do not wander around if the player is farther than 32 blocks and mobs do not wander off edges (even open trapdoors) unless pushed by pistons or other mobs. The only exception is if the mob farm has water channels, which do not work on endermen.
Endermen do not pick up half slabs.
Half slabs are not required to make a trap spawn no spiders, one-block wide shelves will do just fine.
The landing pad need not be large, you must push the mobs off the trap to make them fall anyways so you might as well push them into a small area.

I'm just going to make a trap so endermen follow me into a huge drop and then they die muhahaha!!
There are two problems with that: 1 - Endermen don't follow you, they teleport around like crazy and kick you in the back. 2 - Any drop that kills endermen will kill you twice over, unless of course you have feather falling boots. Not that dying is terrible, but I don't really want to use it as a common strategy.
A better strategy if you want to hunt Endermen is to just make a 4-block pillar under yourself, they will not be able to hit you but you will be able to hit them.

If you want mobs to fall, put a sign on the side of the block. The mobs are tricked into thinking the sign is a block...Unless they changed that... i dont think they did though.
It's really not hard to farm endermen at night if all you want to do is get enough for the ender portal. Certainly a lot easier and faster than building a functional trap for that purpose.
@Moonrox: As I mentioned before, the goal of this endeavor is to get enough Ender pearls to get to the end. It's a pretty safe bet that I will make an endermen farm in the end at some point, and it may use the same design, but that's not the point of this trap.
@Christoi + rodabon: I'm beginning to think that the best plan may be making a 4-block high mob-proof walkway in a dark area and drawing the Endermen to me by looking at them. And the point of this isn't necessarily about being efficient with my time. It's not as if playing Minecraft is an efficient use of my time in the first place.
@horaholic: They fixed it. At least as far as Endermen are concerned. In my creative map I made a 3x3 platform surrounded by signs and spawned Endermen on it. Sure, enough, they wandered around but did not wander off the edge. They only fall if you spawn enough of them for them to push each other off the edge.

I discovered a solution that works fairly well. I made a large mob trap in the sky that is periodically flushed by water. Whenever endermen spawn in there they get hit by the water and teleport onto the ground, where I am waiting under a 2-high roof to slaughter them. Using this method I obtained enough pearls to get to the end and tonight I killed the Ender dragon.

@JTTCOTE2: I wasn't finding enough endermen doing that, and doing that involves getting attacked by other mobs as well.
@Markan: Yes, of course, and I'll probably end up doing that for the XP and massive amounts to pearls I'd get from a good enderman farm in the end, however the goal of this particular trap was to actually obtain the pearls to get to the end.

This is actually really easy. Just place a series of signs that read: "Ender candy this way. --->" and have it lead to a hole deep enough to kill them. Be careful with this. Each time they read a sign Enderman become more and more suspicious, so you have to change it up a bit. Your last sign should look something like, "The candy is at the bottom of this hole....buuut, you can't teleport there or it will disappear. You have to jump down. I promise...I'm not lying."
Here is my demonstration of a mob trap designed to combat the mobs that stop moving when out of range. This AI feature was adding in 1.1 and the mob trap was built in 1.2 so some of the parts may not work any more.
It is called a sieve trap and has pistons pushing the spawning pads back and forth causing the mobs to glitch through the floors and fall to their deaths.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

He or she said that they were making this farm to get ender pearls to get to the end. I also have this problem
