Like would I get the best benefit out of every piece of armor having Prot IV or Thorns etc?
Or is it like if I have one piece of armor with prot IV I get the same overall benefit as if all my armor had prot iv.
I'm not sure how it works with thorns, but I don't see that as being a particularly useful enchantment in the first place, so I've never bothered to work out the exact mechanics of it all.
The various types of protection stack, up to a point. After that, additional enchantments or levels become redundant. See the wiki for additional information: http://www.minecraft...ect_calculation

Thorns increases the damage/wear on your armor in return for being almost completely useless outside of a PVP fight, it also adds major level repair costs to your armor running you over the 40 level limit on the anvil. Basically what I'm trying to say is that "thorns" are rubbish and should never be used by anyone unless they are only looking to use it for PVP (and you still wont be able to repair it if it is combined with more than one other enchantment once they are leveled up).
Sorry for the bump, but Thorns is useful in a PvP fight, can be combined with protection and you will still being able to repair the armor. Thorns III + Protection IV = 3x8 + 4x1 + 3 penalty for two enchantments + 2 when the item is renamed + 1-3 for the unit = 34-36 cost for 1 unit(diamond) so its manageable i think. The downside is that both Protection and Thorns enchantments wear your armor quicker(im not sure how much quicker for either Thorns or Protection - if anyone have info pls share it) but if you use this armor only for PvP its not a problem.
Also does Axes shatter armor quicker in PvP? I heard that rumor a couple of time but is it true or not, and again how much quicker ?

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
