The title says it all. There are a lot of aspects to pvp, but there are 2 main aspects. Gear and PVP itself. I'll start with gear.
Gear Okay, so the first thing you need is gear. Depending on the server, you'll often be facing people in standard iron armor or heavily enchanted diamond armor. Learn what you'll need, and bring the correct gear accordingly. The trick is balancing deadliness and price (in time or resources) for the stuff you're using. Weapons- Use a sword. Sharpness and fire aspect help with damage. Fire aspect is best, it caps at II, which means longer burning. Sharpness increases damage by about 1 heart per hit, so higher levels are preferred. The max you'll get here is sharp IV fire II, but sharp V is possible. Knockback may be nice with fire aspect, due to the fact that your enemy will burn during the time spent getting back to you. Fire aspect also stops enemies from running, as it stops their sprint when they take damage. Always enchant weapons for 1 enchantment level when going to PVP, you're almost guaranteed to get sharpness 1, which can make a big difference. Using bows can work, but I don’t recommend it for most servers. Generally, combat will be mostly (if not all) melee - ranged, so just use a sword. However, if you do intend on using a bow, at least use power 1, it makes a big difference. Armor - A simple choice, but it does matter. Iron or diamond. I’m not going to tell you what to use, depending on the server figure out what works for you. Enchantments are a bit more complicated. For pvp, you’ll only want protection. Protection 1 is common at level 1, so if you don’t have lots of xp that’s probably the way to go. If you do have a lot, try higher levels for protection 3 or 4. It’s very effective, however, the armor breaks a lot faster. I wouldn’t recommend enchanting higher than prot 1 on iron, it would be a waste. Protection also prevents against fall damage and potion damage. Potions- This section depends severely on your server. Get a feel for the environment, and try pvp a few times. If people are using potions, then listen up. If not, don’t worry. First off, the strength potion. It gives you 3 hearts of extra damage per hit. It makes a huge difference. I’d recommend using this in every fight you can. Instant damage and Instant health are tougher to make, but if you can make them, bring them. They do make a difference. If you’re stacking your bar full of potions, bring at least one poison. Whether to go for glowstone or redstoned posion is your call. Depends on the length of the battle. The length of the potion should match that of the battle. A couple other underused but effective potions are speed, slowness, and weakness. Speed and slowness help if you expect that your opponent will run, and weakness will reduce the damage they do slightly. Both help. Fire resistance is okay if you expect fire aspect, but not really needed. Your opponent- The situation of the battle makes a huge difference, but I have to assume here it’s a standard pvp environment. Study your opponents. What armor do they wear? What do other players think of them? These can help you greatly. Don’t start a fight you can’t win. Watch out in case you get ganked and are attacked by multiple people. If you’re running, you may be out of luck. You’ve got two options while running: a. Regroup, and try to fight again, or b. Keep running. If you have no chance, keep running. Your attacker can cut corners and you probably don’t have a chance. However, you can eat your food and regen to full health and try to attack again if you think you have a chance.
The Actual PVP- This is where it gets good. First, find your opponent. Either agree to fight or sneak up on them. When you first attack, make sure you sprint at them. Then, jump and hit them to guarantee a critical hit. Go to the left or the right of them and try to hit them from behind. This won’t always work, but when it does it’s worth it. Continue attacking. Here, continue jumping for crits and block between attacks by alternating the right and left click buttons. Stay on target. If you’re about to die, your opponent probably is too. Either keep attacking or run. Your call. Use potions either toward the beginning or end of your fight. In the middle, it could cause you to take too many unneeded hits. Special Servers- If your server uses mcmmo or allows for food to instantly heal you, this is what you should be concerned about. Mcmmo- This is a special combat plugin. The abilities can do a lot of damage, so use them. If you want, bring an axe to use the ability by right clicking. This will do for a short amount of time a ton of damage. Quickly switch back to your sword unless you have high axes skill. This applies to any combat skills. If you have any very high skills, use the weapon pertaining to that skill. Food instant heal - There aren’t many of these, but they are a lot of fun. Make sure to quickly switch between your weapon and food while you fight. If you run or are knocked back, it may be a good idea to quickly switch it out with many other food items that you bring with you.
That’s it for now. If you have a certain server that you find troubling with pvp feel free to link it and I can give you some tips, or I’ll write it in a section here.
Also, I heard there was a list of the best minecraft pvpers at minecon. I was wondering if anyone had a picture or a list of it. It's not for me, I think a friend might be on there.
I disagree with you on that bows don't matter much. In my experiences, enchanted bows are the best first hit. Which means I usually hit my opponent straight on with a fully charged bow, then beat them with my sword.

Good guide
Yeah. The topic poster forgot to include an attack strategy that could win you numerous fights. Sneak and use the bow at the same time while making sure you stay behind cover so you can't be seen such as trees, steep hills, dark caves, etc. And make sure you stay a considerable distance from your target because even if you are using sneak, they will still easily be able to spot you up close. (15 blocks) Make sure you are at least 2 chunks away; preferably 3 so it gives you time to run.
A good thing to remember is that you should avoid a conflict in Hardcore PVP servers whenever possible. The combat relies heavily on connection, and having a fast clicking finger. Giving yourself time to run from a diamond armored foe will save you grief in the long run.
Geurilla warfare is the best in Minecraft. (personal experience) When a diamond armor foe sees you, the first thing he will do is chase you like a barbarian. Don't give him a head start. If you have potions, get to high ground and wait for him to start climbing. If you splash poison in his face he will start running like an Ocelet. So that's why you always have to make sure you catch him in a place where he cant get out so easily.
A bow does help.
also strength potions only give 1.5 extra damage per hit.
However strength II give you the 3 hearts extra
You also forgot to mention cirtical hits
Overall very good guide!

unarmed and axes are only very helpful at very high levels. With unarmed you have a good opportunity of stealing someones weapon, leaving them in alot of trouble.
With axes, at 500 you can two hit your average player, and the right click effect transfers to every enemy in the area of the battle. Highly useful.
Quite a nice guide you've got there, but I'm just wondering why you would play minecraft with the sole purpose of PvPing. Why not play a game with strong PvP foundations?
All the same, nice guide, and nice for those who play on servers and PvP on them occasionally.

"Until philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit and power of philosophy, and political greatness and wisdom meet in one, and those commoner natures who pursue either to the exclusion of the other are compelled to stand aside, cities will never have rest from their evils." -Plato
My Strategy for Battle is to Take off all your Armor and Drink an Invisible Potion if you have McMmo and High Level Unarmed hit them with your hand! I win all of my Battles by Doing that.
