I was wondering what people use mainly as food in Minecraft. I normally get a few apples on the first night that I use (I don't eat anymore until I get golden ones) and normally somehow easily find villages so I eat carrots and potatoes. Even though its the best food in the game I rarely eat meat. Only if I have any left over from collecting leather or feathers.

I live on a diet of baked potaoes, carrots and melon! I rarely make wheat in the last few years, and although I always carry mushrooms for mushroom stew - I rarely cosume it.

In my older world with spawn on an island I have an OP guardian farm nearby, so fish is my staple diet, as I get tons of them from the farm. Early game I grew wheat for bread, and bred cows for steak. Later I transported some mooshrooms to the island and bred those. I still have a lot of them (cows and mooshrooms), but mostly eat fish from the guardian farm.
In my more recent world I have an AFK fishing farm, so again it's fish, but in this case I use salmon, since it's better than normal fish (but I'll eat fish if I run out of salmon). World spawn was near a mushroom peninsula, so that's where I made my base and mushroom stew kept me well fed early game.
On both worlds I do carry a stack of steak as backup/emergency food. I also have wheat, carrot, potato, pumpkin and melon farms, but I use those mostly for trading with villagers.
I mainly eat baked potatoes, plus bread found/crafted from wheat in loot chests - when you use Fortune to harvest them they are really over the top as a tiny 8x8 plot can yield 3 stacks of food, enough to last for about a week of caving for 3-4 hours per day and even without Fortune the effort to get food from them is minimal (Mojang did nerf them a bit in 1.8 (83% as effective) but they have since nerfed most forms of hunger exhaustion, and I often don't eat until I'm about to starve so the increase in drain from regeneration is likely not enough to offset it, and anyway it is easy to get more). Sometimes I find so much bread in a mineshaft that I can entirely subsist on it (I believe it was made less common in newer versions).
My main source of food is zombie flesh, but I still set up crop farms for everything just so I can have variety if I so choose. Most everything I grow gets used for some other purpose, however, whether it be for breeding, building, writing books, or emeralds.
Baked potatoes and fish is usually what I stick with, but if I have a bow with Flame I'll shoot wild chickens for the convenience of meat that is already cooked. In my Let's Play world I'm currently in a Jungle biome, taking out wild pigs with my Fire Aspect sword for some quick and easy cooked pork.
I eat the pumpkin pie my sister makes since it restores 4 shanks (yes i know golden carrot is the best for saturation) and bread with honey which also restores 4 shanks (modded)
autofishing is prevalent on my server, i have chests full of the things in my auto sorter, we are at the point where we don't actually play the game much other than to fix the automation that plays it for us or to eat and build further automation
Baked potatoes usually early on, but beef all the way after that. Best food because of the saturation, dont know if any of the recent meats (rabbit, mutton) are as good ...

Since I mainly deal with modded Minecraft, I eat whatever food happens to be in my inventory at any one time, sometimes even coinciding with what I'm doing. If I had to deal with chickens, sugar cane, milk and wheat, cake is my go-to. If just wheat, then it is bread. Sometimes apples, sometimes meat if it comes up, even fish. I once caught salmon while I was busy getting a fish for the Witchery polynesia charm, so I could make the devil's tongue charm for getting better trades with demons. Though in stuff like IE, I typically stay with farmables like wheat, carrots and potatoes, and automate the farms to make food automatically for me.

Good idea! I normally have quite a few mods too and if I can I have Pam's HarvestCraft that adds lots of food

Yeah, and there are plenty of mods for automating food production. With Immersive Engineering, the Assembler can make recipes much easier, and do three different recipes at any one time. You could have it send in the ingredients for spaghetti with meatballs and pizza, and it'll make them in order.

Pumpkin Pie restores a lot of hunger, but little saturation, so your reprieve from hunger is short lived. It's actually a rather poor food source for that reason.

as I said i know they restore little saturation but i have plenty of pays within my inventory and saturation isn't really a concern for me
In my main survival mode, I have a villager who supplies me with steak, pork, and chicken. That's where I get my main food from. If really desperate, I will go for some baked potatoes. Also if i'm starting a new world, baked patatos early on until I can get a steady supply of steak or something.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Baked potatoes once I get a potato from killing zombies, or if I happen to run into a village.
Just testing.
