Hello and welcome to The Minecraft Journey. This is a survival playthrough from Minecraft InfDev to the most current version of Minecraft (1.12.2 currently). I started playing Minecraft way back in the Beta 1.6.6 days and never experienced InfDev or Alpha as some of you old guys might remember. I started this to see how the experience was back then and to get a better appreciation for all the additions we receive today.
The Rules
1. No mods will be used except Optifine.
2. No glitches will be used that give me an advantage. So no duplication or X-Ray glitches will be done of this playthrough. I will be doing harmless glitches that were later patched such as making a hole in bedrock to the void but none of them will yield me more items or anything like that.
3. I will set a number of goals for each update I play through so I give equal amount of time to each. For example, in Alpha 1.1.2_01, one of my goals is to find a mob spawner of each type.
4. All Alpha updates will be played on easy, all Beta updates will be played on normal and all Official Release updates will be played on hard.
There is no time limit for each update so I will play until I feel it is time to move on.
InfDev Goals
1. Find Diamonds
2. Make a hole to the void
3. Explore a large cave system
4. Build a house and wheat farm
5. Make an InfDev logo
Hi, guys. Was bored one day and decided to start a playthrough all the way from InfDev to Minecraft 1.12.2 (and 1.13 when it comes out). Wanted to do this to notice all the changes and see how different everything is as the version I started playing on was Beta 1.6. Right off the bat, biggest thing I noticed was the lack of cords. It made the game completely different. Before, I use to heavily rely on F3 but without it, I notice the game gives off a different vibe and I probably won't use F3 as often as I did when it gets added in.
One of the things I didn't know was that InfDev had big signs that could not be placed on the side of any blocks. Thank god that was changed. I made a basic house in the side of a hill near spawn and it actually connects with a large cave system. One of the great things about InfDev is how giant caves were in this update. I was stuck in one for like 3-4 hours and it was just massive. Sadly, the version of InfDev in the launcher is not the one with mob spawners (which came later in InfDev) and is not the one with brick pyramids (removed earlier in InfDev). My playthrough of InfDev was played on peaceful due to certain old versions of Minecraft having no sound in the launcher. However, all of Alpha will be played on Easy, all of Beta will be played on Normal and the official releases will be played on Hard. Might change that, might not.
Also, I will not be playing every single version of MC since not every version is a significant update. So I will be skipping a few alpha and beta updates. Each update I play will have a goal. For InfDev, it was to find diamonds, explore a vast cave system and build a decent house and wheat farm. With that all accomplished, it's time to move on to Alpha 1.1.2_01.
My goal for Alpha 1.1.2_01 will be to try to find a dungeon for each type of mob (Spider, Skeleton & Zombies), find diamonds and redstone, build a new house in new chunks and make at least one redstone contraption.
I will also be using certain "tricks and glitches" for this playthrough. I will NOT use duplication glitches, use mods (except Opitfine in later updates), or do any of the X-RAY tricks. Only things I will do is harmless glitches like an activated redstone lamp with no source of power and deleting bedrock to make a hole to the void (will be useful in the future). I will also be making stacks on stacks on stacks of the old wooden slabs that act like stone slabs. Note:
Also will not be a time limit for each version. I will just play it until I finish all my goals for the update.
One of the great things about InfDev is how giant caves were in this update. I was stuck in one for like 3-4 hours and it was just massive.
I once decompiled InfDev and the cave generator was virtually the same as the one used up until release 1.7 (actually, it still is since then as all they changed were a couple hard-coded numbers and let caves cut through more blocks like sand; prior to that Beta 1.8 fixed a bug that caused caves to be inconsistent across chunk borders, this and a change in the way the game sets the seed for each chunk caused caves to generate differently, but still the same size and density until 1.7, which greatly reduced the variation in size and regional density):

June 16, 2010 Caves are now clustered instead of random.
June 17, 2010 Caves have 1–5 exits, enabling multiple escapes. Caves are now so clustered that a cave could be described as "Swiss cheese". More water and lava springs in caves. Tunnels have a wider variety of thickness. Gravel and dirt can now be found in caves.
Official release
1.7.2 13w36a Cave generation tweaked, making caves less dense and interconnected.[1]
Also, to give you some idea of just how large cave systems can get prior to 1.7 I consider one that takes 3-4 hours to explore to be average; the largest have taken a week of daily sessions (each 3-4 hours), and I go through caves very fast (up to 1,000 ores mined per hour).
I truly have enjoyed InfDev for what it was. Sadly, the version in the launcher does not have sound so it was pretty lackluster to play with no sound at all. The version in the launcher is a version of InfDev that removed the infamous pyramid bricks and also did not have dungeons added yet. I played InfDev on peaceful due to there being no sound.
The patch notes for this InfDev version Minecarts and Minecart Tracks added
Gravel and sand fall realistically
Falling off bottom of map kills the player
Sky rendering tweaked
This version is available in the launcher.

So I spawned in the first world I created in this version and fell in love with the spawn area. It was a nice beach with a forest and plenty of hills around it. Important to note back then, the game didn't have biomes so all this land is as random as can be. First thing I did was make a tower on the exact block I spawned on. Will probably do a shrine or statue there to signify my spawn point. I built my first wooden tools and hid those in a chest. I will also be doing something special with those in a future update.
Updated to stone tools and went exploring. I found this huge cave not too far from my spawn and decided to explore. It was massive and I was in there for nearly 4 hours before I decided. There's still a lot more to explore in it but I'll come back to it in the future. While caves here feel more massive than current Minecraft, there is a lack of things to find underground except ores due to no structures being in the game at this point. I did, however, end up finding 11 diamonds and plenty of coal and iron to satisfy my needs.
After exploring the cave, I went back to my spawn and started exploring for a nice place to build. I went about 500 blocks in one direction until I decided the best place to build was my spawn. So I went back, flattened out a hill and built my house into the side of the hill. Inside the hill was a cave system, this one quite small. I dug out my house, placed some wood planks and called it a day.
I then hoed some ground until I got enough seeds and made a decent sized wheat farm in the water near my house.
I then build a little mine in another hill near my spawn and dug down to bedrock and used the farmland/hoe glitch to delete some bedrock and make my hole to the void. Not sure what to do with this but I knew I wanted to do this as soon as possible. I found more diamonds while doing this as well.
With all my goals done, it was time to make my InfDev sign. I made it out of wool which is quite annoying to find in this version (sheep despawn and don't re-grow wool yet).
All my goals are complete and it's time to move on to Alpha 1.1.2_01. Why did I skip a few versions of Alpha? Well, all the Alpha and InfDev updates prior to Alpha 1.1.2_01 in the launcher all lack sound so might as well as start Alpha with the versions that have sound. InfDev was fun and the lack of F3 made it all the more important to remember where everything was.
Alpha 1.1.2_01 Goals
1. Find a Zombie Spawner 2. Find a Spider Spawner 3. Find a Skeleton Spawner 4. Find diamonds 5. Find Redstone 6. Explore a vast cave system 7. Build a new house in new chunks 8. Build one redstone contraption (doesn't need to be useful)
Also, in response to TheMasterCaver, I have yet to explore the whole cave system and just spent another 3 hours going through one. Found a few more diamonds (I've found only 11 diamonds so far in this world ). But now I'm fully on Alpha 1.1.12_01 and boy, does it feel great to have sound and it added my favorite part of Minecraft, redstone. Will post again soon.

Small update. Truly am enjoying Alpha 1.1.2_01. Still haven't found a cave as big as the one in InfDev but I'm still looking. Have yet to find redstone or diamond yet (or even Gold) but I'm starting a mine tomorrow to help with that or might just keep looking for a giant cave. So far I've found a skeleton spawner and I managed to get a music disc cause one of them luckily shot and killed a creeper. Found three saddles which will be useful when achievements and most importantly, horses are added. I'd wage I traveled about a couple thousand blocks away from my InfDev area (World size is already 20 mbs...) searching for a perfect place to build and I found a decent spot. Kind of paranoid because with no beds, maps or cords, if I die, I will most likely never find this place again xD. Sorry for the lack of screenshots but every time I screenshot with fraps, it crashes the game so it's a slow process and there's no in-game way to take screenshots yet (added in Alpha 1.2 I believe).
Spent around 6 hours exploring two massive caves around a little dock base I set up. I also set up an underground mine which I will return to eventually. Found a few more diamonds and a decent amount of other resources. Sadly, I did not find a spider spawner or zombie but wasn't really looking to hard for those. I'll move those requirements over to Alpha 1.2.6 as I feel I'm spending way too much time on an update that honestly did not change that much. Alpha 1.2.6 adds the Nether along with Ghasts and Pigmen. Alpha 1.1.2_01 was a blast and I really am enjoying this playthrough. (Screenshots taken on Alpha 1.2.6)

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
