I'm new to Minecraft (Got it on Christmas, its called the java edition) And I don't know how to start. I played a bit in survival, but I just walked around explored a bit, but it turned presumably night, and this skeleton creature with what looked like a bow, shot me and I died! I was all the way back at what looked like where I started. I want to figure out how to not die, and find out what else I can do in this game.
heres a rundown on what I do on my first night in survival:
1. (if i spawn near trees) punch a tree and get logs - make the logs into wooden planks [ remember to collect saplings so you can replant ]
[ if i dont spawn near trees, i look around to see if i can find any having at least 5 pieces of wood is better than none]
2. use the wood planks make a crafting table and make some sticks
3. using the wood planks and sticks create an axe, pickaxe and sword to start with - use the axe to continue chopping down trees and collecting more wood
collect at least 20 logs and make some of it into wood planks
4. using these wood planks create a small hut to live in for the night
NOTE; if you cross paths with any sheep, cows, pigs or chickens, use your sword or your fist to kill them and collect their meat. Sheep are very important as they drop wool for you which you can use to make a bed
Also, if you pass any caves avoid entering them until you feel ready to do so, you can use your pickaxe to mine stone and upgrade your tools and make a furnace to cook food, make sure you find coal or have wood left over to burn
Monsters spawn when it gets dark, but come daytime and the Zombies and Skeletons burn away. The Creepers, Spiders, and Witches stick around, though. By Night One, you basically want to find/make shelter, food, and some supplies to make tools. Wood is a must, so go punch some trees!
There's A LOT a player can do in Minecraft, and that's part of what makes it fun. Everyone has their own way of playing the game. The best way to learn is to keep playing, but you can learn a lot from other Players. Watch Let's Plays, use the Official Minecraft Wiki as a resource to remind you how to craft important things, and of course, keep playing and implement the new tips and tricks you pick up on as you go.
Most importantly, play the game how you like to play it--whether it's building, mining, exploring, or what-have-you--and have a grand time!
Also use both google and youtube to find tutorials. There are lots of them, from beginner topics to advanced ones on how to make automatic farms of all kinds.
Thank you so much! I built a hut, that had a furnace, a crafting table, and a little chicken that went into my house. But also, how do you make a bed? I also ended up killing a zombie creature, I almost died!

The bed can be built with any type of wood mixed and matched, but, assuming you're on 1.12 or above, you will need the same color wool for the whole bed. You can either shear sheep, or just kill them. If you kill them, they'll drop one wool, if you shear them they will drop 1 - 3.

Hey guys, I wrote a Minecraft book called The Griefer Attack! Check it out!
Thank you! I made the bed, and it makes things 10 times easier. plus, I don't go to the middle of no where when I die! Ill look at the Wiki when I need to figure out how to craft something.
Thank you very much! I use doors now, and now nothing can get in.
So not to be nosy, but what's your setup look like now that you've had a little more time to get the hang of things? Are you staying in a hut? A cave in the wall? Obviously your gameplay will change as you go, but if you feel comfortable sharing what your Survival environment looks like so far, I'd love to see it!
Assuming you are playing in minecraft survival 1.12.2, press the book in the crafting table menu to open up a list of items. Press the item you want to craft to see the crafting recipe. You can also hover over tools to see their attack damage. I suggest using swords or axes to attack. Don't spam your weapon or it won't do any damage. Wait till the cooldown which is about 3/4 of a second to attack. Watch out for mostly creepers (green and explodes) and baby zombies which are pretty rare.

The most important tip... read the forum (for example this thread on the same topic was only a few below yours: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/2879765-beginner).

You can look at the minecraft wiki if you want to know how to make something. https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Bed
Also if the monsters are giving you trouble when you are still discovering the game I recommend putting the difficulty on easy or peaceful.
Also, don't spam your attacks but wait a moment between every strike, if you spam your attacks it won't do much damage.
Good luck!

Ok, thank you! I was wondering why I couldn't make a bed with different wool.

Good job at creating your first essentials, keep going!

Don't mine at night!
(Jk... That's a song but really you should mine at night that's what I do.)
Don't pretend to be someone you aren't. Be yourself. Even if you try to be someone else ill knows its you. Your a terrible actor.
Yeah! There are monsters in the caves anyway, so it's just as dangerous. And if you build your own mines, its a great way to pass the night away.
