So recently my sugarcane farm has stopped working entirely. I'm playing on a public Skyblock server and other people's farms are working just fine, except for mine. I even made another small farm to test if it would work and if the problem was isolated, but it's not.
I read that sugarcane don't even need light to grow, but I put light anyway. They are planted next to a mix of flowing and still water blocks, and they are planted on sand. They were working just fine a few hours ago but now they've just decided to stop completely.
This is very frustrating as on the server that I play on Sugarcane is one of the most highest selling items, and I can't make currency without this. Hopefully someone can help me.
P.S. I'm on 1.8.9 if that has anything to do with it. It's also been nearly a week in Minecraft days for them to grow, at least to the second stage, but nothing.
I made another layer on top of the bottom farm and this one is working. As you can see in the picture I attached the top farm has canes with 2-3, while the bottom is all stuck at 1. I also had 2 other mini-farms that I used to test and they are now growing as well.
It started working suddenly after two people teleported to my island and started running around. They then left and the growth is still happening. I'm very confused but I still want to see if I can fix the problem completely (let the bottom farm grow as well). I'm wondering if it's not working because there is a farm above it but it shouldn't affect it from what I've heard.
so. this sounds like a stupid question i suppose but no one took and put string above, making them incapable of growing? a grief. try moving your water around. mayby the water streams glitched somehow. i assume your not too high up. you could always remove the source block of sugarcane and replant as well. kinda like a reset. ok my rambling incoherent answer is done.

Yes i know, my spelling sucks.
Check out my You-Tube Channel (BringerofKaos) for plenty of Minecraft Content and my Lets Play series:
You might also try placing and removing blocks over the 1st level of cane, I've seen cases where trees would not grow until I did this due to some sort of ghost block glitch although the same thing happening simultaneously to most of the columns in several chunks beggars the imagination…
Best of luck and look forward to hearing what the cause turns out to be (or at least what the fix was…).

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.

UPDATE: It's working... sort of.

Do you have the issue in singleplayer or on other servers? If not, then the issue is with that server.
