Hey all I'm new to the forum but have been playing PSMC for quite a while. The other night I was doing some cave exploring and came across a zombie and skeleton farm that were close enough together to be able to join them into one Xp farm. I've done some searches on the subject but I'm not finding any results. Is this a common thing and I just have not experienced it yet?
I'd use water channels to funnel both into the same drop of about 20 blocks so I can kill both at once (yay for sweeping strike of swords.)
They will not inhibit each other - this kind of spawner ignores the mob cap.
The more difficult part for me would be researching what kind of elevator could lift these mobs in order to get them to an elevation to drop 20 blocks while I am still within 16 blocks of each.
Water elevators have changed their operation in recent updates. Think a bit about how you want to treat baby zombies too. One tip - baby zombies cannot fit under a trapdoor, so fit the opening of your kill chamber with a trap door.
From my experience and reading this is very rare in Vanilla.
Nice score :>:
I'd be interested in seeing what you do with this…
My initial inclination was that it would be best either to build
A ) separate farms with the kill cells back to back (so I could stand in the center and clear them alternately)
B ) separate farms with the kill cells just far enough apart that only one spawner was active at a time to maximise one sort of drop
…but writing this, I sort of want to find something like this so I can build
C ) which allows me to switch between modes A ) & B )
C should be easy enough, either use redstone lamps to disable a spawner you don't want active or combine A and B with three waiting areas, one in the middle, within 16 blocks of both spawners, and one to either side, within range of one spawner each.
If you're REAL careful with your calculations and the spawners aren't RIGHT next to each other you should be able to set the kill cells right on the borders of the area within range of both spawners so that if you stand between them, killing mobs on either side, both spawners are active and if you stand on the other side of one kill cell only that spawner is active.
Or you can have three kill cells and switch water streams so either both mob types end up in the middle or each type goes to their own kill cell when their spawner is active.
I like to use a center flush system. It moves the mobs out of the spawn area and into the mobivator much more quickly. For the zombies I have the start of the elevator with the water block at head level so it only picks up the adults. The babies drop into lava under the elevator.
For the kill room I don't bother trying to pre-soften them, because you can never get a true 1-hit kill that way.
This is my 1-hit kill device. It will give you a true 1-hit kill, even when mobs spawn with armor (you can kill a zombie or skele in full enchanted diamond armor with one hit). When I have enough mobs on the trapdoor I push the stone button, then the lava retracts, the trapdoor opens, the mobs drop onto the diorite block, the trapdoor closes and the lava returns.
At this point the mobs have taken no damage. They are at full health, plus whatever armor they are wearing, and yet with one swipe of an unenchanted wooden sword I can kill all of them. Cheats you say, or perhaps magic? Nope, just clever design, which I wish I could take credit for, but the original concept came from sZPeddy. Mine is a modified version of his design.
So how does it work? Well, mobs will swim up in liquid, and lava is a liquid, and mobs will also hop up when hit. When I attack with the wooden sword it will hit all of the mobs, thanks to the swipe attack. When hit, the mobs will all hop up, which puts their heads into the lava, so they will try to swim up, but the trapdoor blocks their way, and they just hang there with their heads in the lava until they die (which happens pretty quickly since they are in lava).
And then the drops and XP come raining down.
Something like this with both a zombie and skele dungeon would be great.
Thanks for the replies! I was able to find the sweet spot and funnel both mobs down the same shaft to the kill room. So I just stand in the sweet spot and collect Xp and an unimaginable amount of loot. Baby zombies are washed away to a lava pit. I have a series of hoppers and chests set up to handle the insane amount of loot and trash that is being generated. I just watched a video on how to set up and automated smelting system so i might try that to help with smelting all the iron and gold armor into nuggets. I have a feeling its not going to work like I want to tho.

If you wish to afk for a long time while waiting for mobs to build up, you will have to deal with entity cramming otherwise you will only have 23 mobs in there no matter how long you afk'ed.
To get around this, you will need to make the holding chambers 3 blocks wide with ladders on each side like this.
2 ladders on each side. The trap doors are there to prevent baby zombies from escaping and to prevent the mobs from attacking you if you stand too close. Have the drop chute in the middle connected to a lava blade or an auto crusher of some sort or just have the drop chute for 23 blocks high. You can even get away with not having a mob softening system if you have a sweeping edge sword.
With the ladders, the mobs will never take entity cramming damage so you can leave your player afk and build up mobs overnight while you sleep. Wake up in the morning to hundreds of them waiting to be killed by you so you can harvest all their exp.

Just testing.
:headbash: bad words :headbash: very many bad words . . .
how I fail to consider the simple and obvious solution continues to astound
I need to remember this if I ever find two spawners close enough together
