Broad or specific? You could give every item there own chest, or to be less specific- Building blocks, food, valuebles, records, redstone stuffz, tools and armor.
you could also just put valuable things in one chest and trash in another and excess items in chests in either an attic or basement. thats my method, and it works pretty well if i do say so myself.

I put all my dirt and cobble and gravel in a chest(All excessive mining materials) and all the ores and minerals in a chest, and all the mob drops in a chest, and also a chest full of food and farming stuff(Such as apples and meat and also farming tools and seeds). That works for me, hope that also works for you!

Depending on how much stuff you have you can either make a compact design with a checker pattern of chests in a wall or you can make a large storage room laying them out how ever you like. I would suggest the second after you are a fair ways into your world so you can have all of your stuff in one spot and know it will be pretty safe from mobs like creeper explosions.
For general storage strategy, I find my strategy changes quite a bit throughout the game:
Very early game, two chests are usually enough (valuables vs misc).
Later, I have 5 or so double-chest for major categories of items (valuables, mining blocks, food, wood stuff, tools).
Add more chests when your existing ones get too full, or too disorganized.
As things further develop, I tend to put my primary storage near the source, instead of a single central location.
(chests of mob drops near the mob trap, chests of gardening supplies and crops near the farm, chests full of wood by the tree farm).
In addition, I'll store items near where they will be used (brewing supplies in chests at the brewing station, etc.)
*ignore different colored chests, mods
my setup is as thus: rubble (cobble dirt sand gravel), fuel (wood coal saplings), drops (mobs, plants, food), minerals (ores), materials (building stuff and items/weapons) and magic (brewing and enchanted stuff)
when a chest fills up, make another above it. if rubble fills up, make a huge project with all that stone!

Just whatever works for you, I guess.
