Hello,
I have a pretty simple but efficient "AFK" fish farm. It works pretty well... however.. it is really time-consuming to pick through the garbage to get the enchanted books. My question is ... " Is there a simple way to filter/sort these NON-STACKABLE books? Without having to just filter for everything else, and have that be the "catch-all" item? Any suggestions would be humbly appreciated.

yes, you can filter for non-stackables. What you want to do is create a hopper pipeline where a hopper imports one item at a time and then stops. Read this with a comparator. Since the stackables are only 1/64 of a slot and non-stackables count as a full inventory slot, they will read as much "less" on the comparator redstone strength signal then stackable items. You can create a switch with this by having a signal of a certain strength activate a something to pull that item off farther down the line.
I will note this will NOT only sort books. it will sort out all unstackables so fishing rods and bows and leather boots you fish up will go through as well, but it will help sort some.
Another thing you can do is the reverse of this, which is what I would recommend as it sorts things better. Just create a normal filtering system for every other stackable item you can fish up all on a hopper pipeline using hopper filters and with your fishing stuff passing on top in a hopper pipeline. Then the only things that make it to the end chest are unstackables. Google "hopper filter minecraft", there are loads of designs.

This has a filter *explicitly* for any non-stackable item. Unfortunately, it is horribly hard to filter on "just fishing poles" or "just books". I'm not sure that can be done at all, except for using command blocks. But what you could do is set up an item elevator to pump your fishing drops up to a hopper chain, then use THIS filter first to pull out all the non-stackables into a silo. This will let you look through the silo and pull out all the books to deal with at once, then all of the throw-away items when you want to start yanking those out. After this filter, put in a filter for, say, Lilypads, fish, nametags, or any other item you want to pull out of the hopper chain, then have the rest go to your garbage dump.
Mumbo uses this sort of system for his AFK fishing farm in Hermitcraft 5, so you can poke around this season to see how it is working out for him. He once did an AFK fishing session to get Nametags, then forgot he was EXPLICITLY destroying those AFTER the AFK session. What a goof! But hopefully, this will help you get the goods you are after.
One of the benefits of "map wipes" is, "wow, if I had to build my AFK fish farm again, I would do *THIS*!" In our case, I'm doing without the lit silo, then instead have filters for non-stackable up front, stackable filters, then "direct to garbage" with a chest to dump into the same garbage. Each filter will have a "silo" under it with all holding chests accessible. But for us, it is a process of "make it work" this round, "make it work better" next map. Good luck.

You can sort bows by equipping them to skeletons. Gnembon has a video where he does this. Also, you can sort out both fishing poles and bows so long as you're willing to burn them by using furnaces. This is what I do but I have a disable switch in case I want some of them later.
You can sort water bottles by pushing them into brewing stands. This leaves you with enchanted books and saddles which I've never found a way to sort or eliminate.
Those options seem to be quite expensive for a fishing silo, but for heavy duty stuff I should be aware of them. I do wish we had a "filter block." I think the UI would look like a furnace. The item already inside determines what kind of item is allowed to drop and pass through it. Less laggy and cleaner than a redstone filter and works with nonstackables. But a filter block is unlikely to ever see a vanilla release.
Hopefully pulling useful stackables, nonstackables, then auto burning the rest is a good start for the OP.

The bow sorter with skeletons is ridiculous, yes. Way too hard and expensive just to get bow sorting. However, just burning them up is super simple and I prefer doing that, usually. But like I said, I have a way to switch it off so that I can gather some bows and rods sometimes. But mostly I just want levels, books, and to keep my leather topped up. Also I guess the sticks see a lot of use and string can make wool.

Hello,
Much obliged danaphanous ! I will play around with the comparator signal strength idea you suggested. Thanks a bunch

Make it work, make it work better next map reset. 😉
