I was exploring yesterday and as I came into a savanna biome it really hit me how much I don't like savannas. That got me thinking about which biomes I really like for base building, and which biomes not so much.
I like having desert nearby for sand to make glass and concrete, but I don't care for having my base in a desert.
Extreme hills are fun to explore, but I don't like settling down there and calling it home. Too many nasty surprises when you break stones.
Mesa is a great resource, but getting around can sometimes be a pain, so not a good base location.
Jungle can be exciting, and I've built bases there, but it takes a lot of clearing and leveling. That's sometimes more work than I'm up for.
Forest is good. Lots of trees, of course. Once a clearing is made you can have a nice base in a forest biome.
Survival islands are fun now and then, but if I dream of some day having a large extensive base then that's not the place to start.
I'd have to say plains are my favorite location for a base. Especially plains with a nice view of nearby extreme hills, and maybe a desert across the river.
My least favorite? That's got to be swampland. Can't go anywhere without getting your feet wet!
My two most played worlds are an island in a deep ocean biome (with 3 ocean monuments nearby), and a mushroom island peninsula (mushroom island attached to a plains biome). I particularly enjoy the latter, as it gives me a nice mob free environment, but easy access to other biomes and resources. Besides the pains biome, there are also taiga, forest, savanna and desert biomes within a day's walk.
My favorite biome to spawn and build my main base in is plains, which is a universal theme across every one of my worlds, while I think jungle is the best-looking biome with all of the lush vegetation, if not the easiest to cross, plus they have the best type of wood for mass production (this would be replaced with spruce in 1.7+; I'm mainly referring to 1.6.4 here); by contrast, I have never built a base of any sort, even a secondary base (little more than a place to get more food and wood and store resources) in swampland (more due to chance as I have built a base on water before and they do have land) or ocean; the latter of which I also see as a barrier to exploration and prefer to spawn as far away from them as possible, even using AMIDST or reusing seeds to ensure that (they are still large enough in 1.7+ to be an issue, plus they are much deeper, erasing over half the underground under deep oceans).
Otherwise, during normal gameplay I don't really pay attention to the biome I am in since the only difference is the presence of emerald ore in Extreme Hills (silverfish are not an issue as you can easily tell when you hit one when you use an Eff V diamond pickaxe, plus I don't mine much stone) and I don't do anything with it except hoard it (the only reason to mine it is for the block itself; emeralds are much better obtained from trading). Likewise, loot from temples and villages is only useful for when you are just starting out, not that I haven't made use of villages that I've found (most recently for a new base, with the bonus of being able to trade for emeralds locally instead of having to transport materials back to my main base nearly 4 km away, increasing the amount of mined resources I can carry back at once).
I would say my least favourite biome to build a house in would be a Jungle. Way too many trees, unless I was wanting to make a tree house of some sort. I also, for obvious reasons don't like building in Deserts. But I do like to have them close by for sand for glass.
For favourite Biomes to build in, its a 50/50 between Plains and Extreme Hills. But recently, I have been going for Extreme Hills a lot because I have been loving building houses into the side of a massive mountain.
I also really love finding Mushroom Islands (which hardly ever happens for me... I have such bad luck). No mobs spawn there so I find it a nice place to live and stress-free because of the no mob thing.
My favorite biome for building a house: Plains. It's just a nice, flat biome with a lot of easy spots to build a house. Also the view from a plains biome is usually pretty nice (with the adjacent forests and such).
My least favorite biome for building a house: Jungle. Just too many trees. Unless it was a tree house, but even if it was a tree house, I'd prefer Mega Taiga over Jungle.
My favorite biome for scenery: Savanna Plateau M. Must I say much more? HUGE MOUNTAINS!!!
My least favorite biome for scenery: The Void Deep Ocean. Not much is there at all. Pretty much just water and gravel and that's it.
My favorite biome for usefulness: Forest. Everything you need is in a forest. Lots of wood, animals, everything.
My least favorite biome for usefulness: Mushroom Island. I mean, really? No wood at all? How is a person supposed to survive in one of these biomes? And mushrooms are kinda useless...

Not sure what my least favorite biome would be.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Worst: Savannah; a lot of long grass and I don't like the trees.
Best: Mega Taiga; the combination of trees, podzol and mossy cobble make it look like the ruin of somekind of ancient civilisation.
Mintutor now works in 1.13!
MrKite & Mc_Etlam ... I salute you!
