In my best world, I saw the stronghold in a chunk glitch under a raven that I know of. I swam across the swamp biome to the raven and saw the top of the large library at the bottom of the raven.
Def need to be able to see it, otherwise if you're that lucky and just happen to randomly dig into one while mining, then you should be playing the lottery, not minecraft!
I had a heck of a time finding one even with using the eyes. Altho once I realized you can "triangulate" the position with just a few tosses, it probably would be a lot easier the second time.
I killed the Dragon too once I found the stronghold, but I almost wish I didn't cause now I really feel unmotivated to progress my world further. sigh
Once, there were just these few stone bricks sticking out of the wall in a cave. It wasn't my world either which was really annoying! I have to farm blazes and hunt down endermen but on someone else's world it's just there? Really‽

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
I was doing a large branch mine and I hit a mineshaft. I stopped mining and explored and after a few hours of pillaging of all the wood and ores I found a stone wall, though it was a dungeon or something (Yes I know dungeons are cobble and mossy). I dug into it and explored. Bang a stronghold.
The worst part wsas it had no eyes of ender in the portal. That part sucked.
Yep, when they first came out actually and it was news to me when I stumbled into it, I was like;
EEEXXXXXPPPPLLOOORRRREEE!
Then I died cause I fell into a crevice and had a long, messy spill on some stone.
I found one in my most recent survival world generation ("Genius Loci" is the topic name here, but I forget which forum). By the closest village, there is a portal room in the ocean, all by itself.
Yes, as a matter of fact. One day, I stepped out of my house in an NPC village and started digging a mineshaft down to level 12 when I chanced upon...mossy stone brick! This was on a new server map, and right at the point where everyone was racing to get to the end. My friend and I ended up finding 2 ravines, a zombie spawner, and an abandoned mineshaft connected to the stronghold. All right under my main base -- definitely my luckiest minecraft moment ever!

I was caving and i came across a ravine. at the end of the ravine i found an abandoned mineshaft and so i went in there to explore. Then the abandoned mineshaft came out into another ravine and from that mineshaft i could see some stone bricks. i didnt know what those were so i went over there and found it. i explored it after a little bit of research on the wiki. I found another in a similar way with it being in a cave right off of a ravine i was exploring.
Another fun one, i was throwing my eyes of ender and i only had one left. so i threw it. and went off in that general direction but got side tracked by some spiders skeletons and a desert temple. then i threw it again and it disappeared after it threw it. so i went off in the direction and said to my friend "lets dig right here i bet its here" so we start spiraling down and by Y=25 im like "maybe we should give up i might have been wrong" at Y=17 we see a stone brick. we then spend the next half hour exploring the stronghold and find the portal, it was behind a solid wall. we then spiraled back up and i found i had guessed about 12 blocks away from the portal. My friend then accidentally jumped into the portal and i had to make an ender chest, bring it to him and then put both are stuff in it because we had just gone exploring and had found 15 diamonds in desert temples.
I actually found one a few days ago without using the eye, as well as the end portal. I was just digging a hole and managed to dig right into a stronghold's library.

My posts will always have typos and that fact will always drive me crazy.
Found about 5 without, and.... 2 with. I usually don't hunt em down, but just get lucky and find them. One I literally just walked in a cave at spawn, and it was there. Hilarious thing was the fact that I had detoured and make a base nearly half a kilometer away, and was on the hunt for a few of the things I might have missed in the area. Somehow... I missed an entire stronghold. I then broke into another few strongholds while branch mining in a few worlds, and even more just by lucky ravine splunking. If you can't tell, I explore a LOT in my worlds. Usually explore about a 5 kilometer radius around where-ever I make my base. Considering how Strongholds are within a 1 kilometer of spawn at max, and I tend to make bases within about a kilometer of spawn.... yea.
I find them tons somewhat close to my base by my standards.
I was wondering if anyone had ever found a stronghold without using Eyes of Ender. Please share how it happened.
Although, certain seeds let you spawn over them (singleplayercommandstest) I believe that used to be one but the generation changed.

The Unofficial Suggestion Guide - Everything you need to know to not make goofy mistakes in a suggestion! Honestly though, you should really go there.

Let's see if I can get the seed/coords.
