My world is locked in hard mode and I never use commands or mods. I fight often through the night in caves and outside in a variety of regional difficulties from the highest to the lowest. Usually, I fight around my main base which has had the highest regional difficulty for years of real time. However, my I describe my play style as "distant adventurer," so I fight in quite an expansive set of circumstances.
Tonight, it dawned on me that I don't recall the last time I saw a spider jockey. Clear back in PCMC 1.8.x, maybe? So, late 2015? Unless I'm forgetting instances.
I looked through the bug tracker but admittedly, I'm not very good at navigating that site. My Google-Fu didn't reveal any other issues, either.
I understand they are rather rare, 1% of spiders, but I've killed several hundred spiders and I've seen mobs in full diamond armor since I recall last seeing a jockey.
Thanks!

They're still around; I encounter them all the time. One thing I have yet to see is a diamond armored monster though. That's really neat that you've seen one. IIRC they only have a 0.04% chance of spawning.
They are called skeleton jockies I don't care if microsoft renamed them.
Jockey Definition > the rider of a horse
notch joked that there was a skeleton jockie sometime not spider jockey. They renamed it to spider jockey since their mobspawnerbase logic is now the bottom mob rather then the top but, doesn't fit the joke anymore.
I haven't seen one for ages either (playing 1.11.2). I assumed like the other jockey types they were currently glitched, but I suppose the mechanic for the chicken based jockeys is seperate to the spider one? I defo have seen an increase in chickens, even seen one spawn at night in front of me, but no riders. I supposed the spiders we're doing the same ...

Yeah they are super rare. I plan on making a mod that allows for mounted mob entries though that will change that. I am unsubscribing from this forum they are called skeleton jockies read explanation above.

To me, they have been since around 1.9. I haven't seen a zombie/chicken jockey or a zombie pigman/chicken jockey for ages, and as I said, whilst out one night I did see a chicken spawn near me but no baby zombie was on him. I assumed it wasn't a "passive mob" chicken because I thought passive mobs spawn rarely in already created chunks as the limit is very low and this is usually taken up by the passive mobs spawned when the chunk was generated. Plus the fact it was right on top of my farm area which contained a hundred or so rabbits/cows/pigs/sheep etc which I assume also count way past the passive mob cap.
I've also seen a chicken dropping down in my gold farm with no ZP on his back. So as I'm playing 1.11.2 perhaps its been fixed in 1.12 onwards?
Next time I see a new chicken in the area, i'll trap him and see if he lays eggs. I usually just arrow the little critters.
I still see chicken jockeys a lot. More than spider/skeleton jockeys, anyway.
I see them fluttering down from my MobFall darkroom spawner pretty often, sometimes with the baby zombie still riding, and sometimes just the chicken (due to the baby zombie dismounting during the water flush).
Hmm... now that I've thought about it, I believe the reason I see more chicken jockeys is simply because they are easier to discern. If a spider/skeleton jockey dismounted during the water flush, I'd only see a spider and skeleton fall, which wouldn't be anything unusual (unlike seeing a chicken, which is much more obvious).
I don't often see them in the wild, which isn't surprising when you do the math.

As far as I know, they have been called spider jockeys since they were originally added. I have never heard of anyone refer to them as skeleton jockeys. Here is a post from 6 years ago which references the Minecraft wiki (which also called them Spider Jockeys back then).
On topic: It has been a very long time since I have seen any spider jockeys in recent versions of Minecraft. I have just assumed that they were extremely rare.
Yeah, I'm sure. I just wondered as you are playing 1.12 whether you'd seen any baby zombie/baby zombie pigman jockeys recently.
I . . . I hesitate to answer that. I almost did in my last post, but then decided against it. I think I may have seen ZPM jockey recently in my gold farm, but boy, I just can't recall the last time I saw a baby zombie jockey. I know there are chickens in my gold farm, but . . . I just hesitate to say that they didn't have a rider. I can't say that with 100% certainty.
Here's another thing, though it's way off topic. The ZPM's at the bottom of my gold farm don't aggro. Ever. At all. In Hell and at the top, they do. But once they fall into the collection area, I can punch them all to death one at a time and none will attack, nor will they make the "triggered" noise.

Well, well, well. Will you look what we have here . . .
Screen shot taken about two hours ago. Guess I'm going to have to drop my suspicions about ZPM/zombie baby jockeys.
But I was hesitant to voice them in the first place, unlike with spider jockeys. I'm still very suspicious of those. I really don't think I've seen one since 1.8.9.
If you one-shot a ZPM, he doesn't get time to call his friends.
You might want to keep one ZPM handy, trapped nearby, but healed (with splash harming potion); armoured; so you can tap him to make 'em all angry.
You only need to do that once per 'session', because he'll stay angry until you leave (40 blocks). You'd only need to heal(harm) him like... every week or month, 'coz he'll take very little damage from a tap, if armoured up. You're rich, so give him some prot diamond or so.
I'm sure you already know that the ones that can pick up armour from you, given armour, won't despawn.
Ah. Yes, that was it. I let my gold farm run while I ate and started punching when I came back. Eventually, after about the tenth one hit, it survived and they all went berserk.
I might have to try your ZPM "whipping boy" advice, too! Thanks!

I just spent some time at my spider dungeon grinder and I saw 2 jockeys, but I managed to miss screenshots of both.
Gettin' too slow in my old age, I guess.
World started in 1.8 and currently playing in 1.12.1 (PC/Java).
Not too often I hear the phrase "I'm getting too old" in this game's community. Seems like the vast majority of players are young kids lol.
The popularity of the console versions probably has contributed to that.
