Hey, I realize this may not be strictly speaking a Survival topic but am not sure just where to ask - I get really frustrated every time I have tried to build a nice-looking building (so far mostly, a house) with a decent roof. I've watched some YT videos of good-looking houses and such. But when I try to use what I've learned, I get quickly frustrated that either I seem to spend ALL my time stacking up scaffolding, and/or I place stairs and they place upside down, or sideways. I give up on the roof project eventually.
How did you get through this phase - or if you never have felt that frustration, are there tips you can give me to see projects through?
1. Always build a framework on each end wall, one block lower than the roof, if going for a triangle roof. Then place the first set of stairs on one half of one framework, work across to the other side, making sure to stand on the last stair you placed on the row you are working on. I'd leave an overhang over the framework by 1 block and the same for the other walls, so spiders cannot climb up. The stair blocks are considered transparent, meaning mobs cannot spawn on right-side up stairs.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!

I've heard multiple pro builders voice frustration—in creative even—working with stairs. We know your pain, especially those of us, like you, who aren't really builders.
Practice makes perfect. The more you work with stairs the easier it becomes. It starts to become more natural. You finally figure out and retain how to place them to get them to face the direction you seek. It just takes time.

My short story-like journals; quick-and-easy reads:
Aim at the bottom of the block you are placing stairs against for upright. Aim at the top for upside-down. Basically, stairs are placed like slabs. Bottom slab = upright stairs, top = upside-down stairs. Of course stairs are also directional, but that should be easier to understand.

Thank you for the empathy (and jokes too!!) and for the tips, too. Funny I have NO problem placing slabs, and yet for some reason it hasn't translated to my stair placing. I'm sure it's true that it's partly because I just don't practice placing many stairs. I can work on that and I am sure it will help.
Corners with respect to stairs behave the same way pistons and other such blocks would - its dependent on your position when you place it. I don't know the exact angle at which you have to be positioned, but when I place corner stairs I always place the corner block on the side adjacent to the wall I'm facing (helpful especially when you are making a complex arrangement that utilizes lots of corners, because the stairs will "follow" my placement instead of drift behind, if that makes sense).

LP series? Not my style! Video series? Closer, but not quite. Survival journal, maybe? That's better. Now in Season 4 of the Legends of Quintropolis Journal (<< click to view)!! World download and more can be found there.

Just a quick update to say, the tips are working! I have gotten distracted a bit because I have mined quite a few emeralds (so I need to scout around to find a village), but I am about halfway done with a nice roof over a smallish house now! This makes me quite unreasonably happy!

what i dod is imagine real life versions of what i want or look for generic builds in google images
then i use that (not copy) as inspiration and try a simple roof nothing fancy
if i'm experimenting with medium projects i usually go to creative and build it with worldedit as help to replace materials or build large walls
don't worry many times i feel like you but i will start to build a really huge building so i bet you can do it

Don't click this link, HE is haunting it...
The Minecraft Wiki has a pretty comprehensive page on roof types/tutorials.
Thank you, everyone! It's a cold rainy September 2 here, so this gives me some things to study today!
