My first time in the nether... I did not know portals coold get disactivated
I guess it's because of this big flying octopus that started shouting at me when I got outside of it.
And of course I did not think about flint and steel. No need to say I feel really stupid...
Any clue about how I can get out of this mess (apart dying and coming back) ?
If you happen to have iron on you, you can go find some gravel (since it does spawn in the Nether) and make flint and steel. But you probably don't have any iron on you.
Remember, any type of fire can turn on/off the portal. If you get another Ghast (the octopus thing) to shoot it, it should turn back on.
Edit: Darn you HandofCreation0 for posting before I was finished!
The ghast (thanks for the name) went away, I'll see if she comes back, or I will go and explore.
Would lava do the trick? I've got a bucket.
If you have a non-netherrack flammable such as wood, yes. Put the wood in front of the portal frame, then make sure the lava can burn the wood but won't enter the portal.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
The huge flying octopus is a Ghast.Once it shoots a fire charge at your portal, your portal will be deactivated. To enable it to work again,Try to find a Ghast and make it to charge a fire charge at your portal frame.
The fire charge will activate the fire and once it shoots at the portal frame,it will activate.
My Nether Portals are both enclosed in Netherrack Caves, however, I normally put a furnace with a Flint & Steel in it to relight the portal if necessary.
Ok, I've done it.
I tried to make a fire charge, but missed the gunpower (I killed a guast, but the loot was too far away from me.)
I tried to get some lava, but I'm very close to the roof, and did not have enough pickaxes on me to go safely 80 blocks below and come back (especially with those stuff triing to destroy my stairs while I was digging them )
So I tried to get a ghast to light my portal. Not easy though, they do not aim very well (not that I'm complaining about it !).
But when the rock close to my portal was in fire, it became easy to bring it at the good place using some wool. So thanks for both advices
And I got a blaze rod on my way, which was why I came in the Nether at the first place. I'm going to do some brewing now (and won't come back without flint and steel !)

LOL!
Did you bring a chest? Put all of your stuff there and die.
Glad to hear you got back home safe. Here's some advice to prevent this from happening in the future.
1. Build something around the portal (preferably made of stone, cobblestone, stone brick, etc.) to keep it (and yourself) safe from ghasts.
2. Place a chest in a safe place in the Nether and put a spare flint and steel in it.
Also when/if you build your 'Nether home' you can also build a few windows on it if you'd like. Ghasts can't see through them.
Iron bars also work well as windows in the Nether. Ghasts can't see through them and the fireballs won't break them.

Let's go for a fight then!

Eeynope! Only a fire source or explosion can reactivate it. Just sit around the portal and wait, another one is sure to spawn soon.
If you have a non-netherrack flammable such as wood, yes. Put the wood in front of the portal frame, then make sure the lava can burn the wood but won't enter the portal.
Just make sure the only exposed side of the wood is the side next to the portal so that fire has to start there.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
The fire charge will activate the fire and once it shoots at the portal frame,it will activate.
or let the ghast shot the portal again it will reactivate...
Or do the "light it with lava and wood" trick.
Or make a fire charge.
Blaze Fireballs also work but the block they set fire to is very precise so you have to be more careful.
