I was just considering moving my home base to a more interesting location and the question popped into my head: what do you guys consider when choosing a location for your main base/house?
I look for the most economical one, I really have three main expectations when looking for a place to set up camp:
1. It has to be near tree's and water.
2. It has to be fairly near caves.
3. It has to be in a workable area, Obviously an extreme biome isn't ideal unless your experienced with house design.
I usually try to find a plains biomes. There isn't much to get in the way of building, and you can also find villages there (sometimes I just live in one of the villager's houses and forget about building my own base/house!)

Antwhere, really. If I find a good enough spot (takes me hours of playing usually) I build a home there. All it needs is clay, a forest with Birch, and maybe a small cave and I'm set. That, and a beautiful veiw.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
I usually try to get a forest biome next to a plains biome. Forest biome because you can get lots of wood, as well as I just like them. Partially nostalgia reasons. Plains so I can do a lot of building without obstructions.
Man I'm so picky where I put my base. It needs to be near a forest but it must be plains. And I have to like the area around it and that does'nt happen very often so it takes a lot of exploring.
Anywhere except...: Icy Plains, dessert, junglebiomes. Areas with various punched holes or caves or ripped by ravines. Land with an awkward half chopped hill or mountain. Jungle biomes.
I dont hate them, im just picky about my home base.
I currently live in a stonghold Im modifying it since halls are torn by caves and ravines. Its very massive and has random rooms all over the place, but im improving it.
I consider the terrain. I try and avoid areas with a lot of ugly water lakes and small caves that op up near the surface. Though sometimes, if there are water lakes and cave openings, I shovel up dirt and just cover them up. I don't care if the land is flat or hilly, I usually find a way to make the house look good on that terrain.
While I find that some terrain in Minecraft can be not the prettiest, it can be fixed with a little effort. A little terraforming helps.

Oh, it's one of you birch fans... Anyway, I can build a nice home just about anywhere, don't have any preferences really, other than not on desert, maybe.
He has all the rights in this world to complain about something that he doesn't like. This is the official forum for the game. This is where he HAS to say the things he doesn't like. And he (usually) proves his opinions with pictures, and well designed thoughts. That doesn't mean you have to agree with him, but at least, you should respect someone who is trying to make Minecraft a better game, instead of just complaining because that is what everybody is doing.
That being said, and OT now... I love the first days because I walk, and walk, and walk (for RL days) till I find the perfect spot. I don't look for anything in particular, but as soon as I see the right place, I know it.
Anyway, since I started using Mystcraft, crating bases has become something a lot easier, and a lot funnier. But of course, you have to have a small base before you can start creating dimensions at will, so... yeah, the first one allways takes a lot of time spent exploring.
He's not trying to make Minecraft a better game. Personally, I think it has it's ups and downs, but I'm not constantly talking about the terrain, because for all we know, Jeb won't ever change it back. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that he doesn't need to be CONSTANTLY complaining and complaining about the terrain. I would rather have a nicer more varied area, rather than just huge hills everywhere I go. And posting all that here doesn't help anyone. It would make more sense to post it in a topic "Why Minecraft sucks"...
I'm not the best player, so my house is usually inside of a mountain. But, if it's not, my house always has to be near water. Even my mountain house in survival is near water. Also, it's nice to be near some trees. My hills biome is like right next to a swamp, so I'm all good. Caves are also a good place to live near by, so you can explore and get resources.
The end. I go live in the end, no mobs, no danger, no heights...lots of trees, and passive animals all over the place.
Lots of ores, no lava...best spot in the game.

Thats all i really do to be honest.

Minecraft [Alpha] 1.7.3 had blocks that you can use to build with.
Minecraft now has blocks that you can use to build with.
Nothing has changed in my opinion." That is all.
