I tamed 5 with 30 bones just a few "chunks" away from my fortress thingy. I got 5 sitting away in the throne area waiting for my arrival. Building them an underground farm and thinking about building a doggy home for them lol.
I think the light thing might be true. I made a grid of 100 torches outside in a taiga, and came back half an hour later, and five wolves were nearby- the first wolves I had seen in over 5 hours.
Took me a few game days of roaming, but I found six wolves all in one chunk, and tamed them all. It took 13 bones in total. I now have a nice-sized pack at home.

Found and tamed 7 the first time, then found another pack of 9 the second time around in the same area I found the first seven @_@
Im gonna have to expand this area...
oh wow thats like 20 wolves, and nice idea of doggy homes. Its a little hard to make them go where you want them to go. I only have 4 wolves, but 3 died from creepers :sad.gif:
3 wolves in a tiny forest area(half plains, islands, and forest)
I BARELY find any, while lighting half of the forest on fire with torches(not literally)

Exactly! I have a forest set on Normal and I have trekked through it 5 times and have found no wolves or skeletons. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM on Normal difficulty at all. It puzzles me. I have cow creepers though. :smile.gif: Moo...BOOM. I'm now sleeping in a hideout to try and get bones. I only have 2 bones from a skeleton that burned to death. I've tried EVERYTHING to attract these wolves, why won't they come to me?
I've gotten about 30 tammed and seen about 100. They're quite common for me but before they weren't. I wonder why? And before you ask "Pics or it didn't happen" That is before the 1.5 update which afterwards all my wolves just went poof.
So far, the largest number I have had is 5, which are all sitting in my house right now. In my first hour of playing the update, I encontered between 25-35 wolves, and managed to get five of them (one of them ate 10 bones before I gave up on it).
In my second hour and a half or so, I have oddly yet to encounter another wolf. I wonder if this is a result of the ones I already have preventing more spawns, as a natural limit to the number the player can have at once? I have heard of people having 6 or 7, but that is the most so far.
Took me a little searching to find them.
Im gonna have to expand this area...
