So, when you start a new world, it's all completely new to you. New terrain, new ideas. You build your house and it seems like the creativity is never going to end. But then BAM! It does.
Is there only one thing to do once the first night falls? Mining? i've made MANY MANY MANY survival worlds in minecraft over the past year, and it seems that after you build your house it's the same thing over and over again. Mine, Collect, Add to house, Hunt, Mine, Collect, Nether portal, Mine, Add to house, Mine, Collect
While the game does get repetitive and predictable after a while I wouldn't suggest turning to mods. Mods ruined the game for me, so now I'm always wondering why something is missing or why something works the way it does.
Sure, I could change the game to the way I want it, or I could let the game mold my preferences to the way it works. I've come to enjoy the game by fixing all the weird quirks in the game without manipulation of the game code. Get creative and do something you haven't. There's always something to do whether you know it or not.
Well you could try going to the Nether before you chop your first tree. But it's going to be very hard.
What are you asking? Of course there's a path to follow! Iron before diamonds. Nether before brewing. There's no way around that. But there's no rules about how fast or slow you go.
Most players, it seems, dig for diamonds on day 1. Not me. I dig a mine at 60, then 54, then 48, then 42. Levels and levels. Along the way, I find caves and explore ravines. Conquer dungeons. In the daytime, I'm out scouting for sheep and pumpkins. It might take me three weeks to find diamonds, and that's okay. I have stacks of iron, I'm safe. I can build anything I can imagine... well, mostly.
Right now I live under an overhang that's about 50 wide and 40 high. I made a shimmering curtain of snow blocks across the mouth, and a staircase inside a pillar up to a high balcony that overlooks my cave-world-thing. Pigs galore, but no carrots. There's some cows nearby, I might domesticate them soon.
When I get finished with this area, I'll probably build a railway to a jungle 400m away - large biomes. Then start over, but this time with fish and cats. And maybe an Ewok treetop city. Or whatever.

Is there any other paths you guys take?
I am ninja'd far too often.

If I'm bored in my vanilla world, I'll usually start a giant building project. Also, automating everything.
It's ok, I'm procrastinating any way.
