Dirt.
Just kidding. it entirely depends on what your gonna build, though i suggest Cobblestone/Stone/Stone Bricks if you want your house to be Creeper - Proof.

Usually,Different blocks have different strength, rareness and so on.Wood is essential for tools and home building but if you are a experienced one,You can use it in case of your house burning up if not,do not use wood but a little section of using wood shall do.
Cobblestone,It does not burn so you can use it too.
Dirt is quite simple and is only for new beginners so I don't recommend using dirt to make your house and is also easy to be exploded by Creepers.
Bricks may be quite a little uncommon but you can still use it though. It is a good material to use and is also a material to use for building huge houses and more.

Pretty much what this awesome poster said, not much more to add. <3
I'd reiterate though and say to find burn-proof and creeper-proof blocks to use, some materials are just not ideal. I'd also like to add that making a floor out of slabs will prevent spawning on that surface. You cold also add extra protection by coating your house in water (Creepers can't destroy blocks if they explode in water) or lava (unless you're using blocks that burn as material). That's more for SMP, though.
That's just a bit of extra advice, not necessarily directed at your question. Personally, I like to build my house out of Netherbrick (found via Nether Fortresses), stone brick, or a mix of glass/water/glowstone which I think looks beautiful. Careful though, I wouldn't recommend the last suggestion unless your house is 100% mob protected.. I learned the hard way.
Depends who you want to be. When I want to be an evil king, stone bricks are the only choice. It looks like you want to be a creeper, so your house would be made of gravel, TNT and anguish.
Idon't doubt that when/if I ever get onto a server I'd make really fancy or hidden base's but ATM I usually build it out of stone bricks and maybe some wood on the inside, have yet to get deep into a large desert, and one of my jungle base's is in a uber large tree. P:
