Hi, I just wanted to make sure if it was worth it to create an Iron Golem to protect my house.
I play in a Survival Multiplayer server where there are no griefers (just a few of my friends and I), so I likely will not be using it for PvP or anti-griefing purposes.
Is it worth the 36 Iron and 1 Pumpkin to manufacture an Iron Golem in order to protect my house from hostile mobs?
If you get a good amount of iron while mining 20-64 then I would say yes, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.
Also, fences and a ton of light would be a good alternative if you can make em look good!

The only reason that I respond more than once to your topic is that I left it in a tab when I left my computer.
Iron Golem protection is awesome but remeber to keep him enclosed or he will just wander of and get lost till he dies in the wilderness :(. I spent all of my Iron on a golem one time and he just left and walked away
I've got exactly 100 Iron right now and too many Pumpkins (lol).
Also, what did you mean by the fences/ton of light part? Is that so they don't wander off?
I say why build an Iron Golem and build fences and stuff to make sure it doesn't run off when you can just protect yourself with a couple of torches? But Iron Golems are very fun to make and have, but it's going to cost you extra.

Even though mechanized warfare is theoretically my bailiwick, I kinda hate iron golems. They are slow and stupid, they wander off, they get stuck because they're so fat, they have a woefully small aggro range, they won't even go after creepers, and worst of all, they don't passively heal. Unless you throw healing or regeneration potions at them, they will just slowly wear down until they fall apart. Skip the machines and just secure the area better.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Iron Golem don't attack Creepers because if a creeper is near someone's home and if a iron golem provoke the creeper, the creeper will explode, thus, griefing the blocks. This is why they were programmed not to attack creepers to prevent accidents from happening.

I realize that. It doesn't change the fact that if you are keeping iron golems around to protect you from mobs, they will do jack all to keep stray creepers from blowing up in your face.

Iron golemns make great guards but if your in to curing villagers you might want to setup a place where they can't get to the zombie villagers your curing. They don't like those guys till they're fully cured.
Iron Golem are pretty curious, they usually wonder off to explore the world. Well it makes sense, being a newly born entity in the mysterious world of minecraft, I would also explore but you would have to keep an eye on the Golem enclosing him and such, otherwise he will wonder off and since you can't have them follow you they will be driven off to the endless world of minecraft. What I do is when I do make an iron Golem, I make them underground where they can explore all they want and demolish any mobs that he encounters. Though there is a chance he will get lost and you wont be able to find him, I see that as a useful way to have iron Golems. But I haven't made any recently, so maybe they're smarter, movement wise, if not Mojang should make it so that iron Golems should walk around a certain area where they were built or be stationary and so when hostile mobs spawn, they attack then go back to their starting point.
well first of all, its not like a wolf that you can tame(meaning it wont fight the mob you hit)
second, they ONLY attack zombies and skeletons (and you if you attack the villagers) so they won't take care of creepers or anything like that

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, just make an iron golem and fence it in. It'll die pretty quickly because skeleton, but hey, it was great while it lasted.
(Non-sarcastic advice: Don't.)
So you'd advise that I simply light the vicinity with torches and fence it in like a farm?
Don't know why I never thought of that.
Thanks everyone.

Golem #1
Waypoint Tag: XYZ
Waypoint #1
Tag: XYZ1
Waypoint #2
Tag: XYZ2
Golem #2
Waypoint Tag: ABC
Waypoint #3
Tag: ABC1
Golem #1 patrols a path between waypoints 1 and 2, while golem #2 stands guard at WP#3 and resets to #3 after combat finishes.
Golems with no tags can patrol like they do now.
I've been here for a loooooooooong time.
