Mushroom biomes are a good addition to the game. They're so rare that you barely find them, and if you do it's a nice surprise. Maybe if they were as common as Forests or something, then I would hate them. But they are fine.
It's not mushroom biomes, it's the terrain generation, see this link for more info. Otherwise, the rarity of mushroom biomes really doesn't affect gameplay.
You know what's funny? I've never heard the following statement before, ever:
"Ugh! ANOTHER mushroom island? These things are everywhere! There's nowhere I can go because there's always a mushroom island right there!"
Why not? Because the mushroom islands are in the middle of the freakin' ocean. On my server, I used AMIDST to find the nearest one, but it still took me hours by boat in a straight line to get there. HOURS!!!
Obviously, mushroom islands are so rare that you most deliberately seek them out in order to encounter them. As such, your argument officially falls to my signature.

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.
The things are so hard to find that I really can't see how it is possible for them to take away from the game. Having a hostile mob free area is taking away from the game anymore than playing on peaceful is.
I am not sure about mushroom biomes, because my first main survival world was right next to one. I "grew up," with mushroom biome. I learned alot about Minecraft while owning that world. (It's gone now. D:)
For me, mushroom isles can either make or break the game. If you have a world with a forest or plains with trees, and there's a mushroom isle. It's great. If it's an ocean biome with just a giant Mushroom isle. There's no trees so it's not worth your time.
I don't really see how they don't fit in with the game. Surely, it must fit in more than a pig attracted to a carrot on a stick. Minecraft strikes me as a game with fantasy appropriate for all ages, and almost anything in this category should be fine for me.
But enough with opinions; let's talk about what they add to the game. First of all, it's creative; I have never seen a mushroom biome, let alone mushroom cows (mooshrooms) in any other game (tell me if there actually is a game with these, though). Second of all, they provide a place sheltered from monsters, with an easy infinite supply of food. At first, this may seem to unbalance the game, but remember that mushroom biomes are very hard to find. This paradise biome serves to provide a nice reward for those who stumble across one in the ocean. Whether or not it takes away from the game is opinion; while I respect any opinion about mushroom biomes, it does add back to the game to make up for any taking away.
..With a Efficiency V diamond pick too, so you feel even worse for having nothing to mine with it.
Back to the topic, I do like Mushroom biomes and Mooshrooms, had an hard time scouting to find some, too. Also, I never spawned right in a Mushroom Biome, but I guess it makes quite a bad starting area.
You really are screwed, considering they spawn in oceans. There's a good chance you get survival-islanded w/o any resources.
The allure of a mushroom island is finding a wierd-ass paradise in the middle of the ocean, and never having to want for anything as long as you brought a supply from the mainland. No evil monsters, no starvation, just a comfortable existence if you don't screw it up. The rarity of the damned thing is what makes it special.

If they were a paradise, It might be cool, but mobs spawn there, and there is nothing you can really survive off of other than mushroom soup.

IIRC, mobs spawn in the ocean, but not on the mycelium, which drastically lowers the danger of them. The mushroom soup is a hell of a food and can be accessed in moments if you have a bowl. It's a paradise in the sense of being free from actual danger beyond an occasional stray monster. For an actual 'paradise', nothing beats a flying island with a transit system.

I always pretend I'm on an alien planet so seeing something odd, like an island full of giant mushrooms... it would look out of place on Earth but it's an alien planet so I deal with it.
I've never seen one though and I don't really see the appeal of them.

It seems to fit nicely, this game fits my needs to have a silly game. To me it adds an extra minecrafty feel.
Squidwards, everything is somehow cubical, punching trees down, meh, it's good.
This is what should happen to people like you that complain about every single F*CKING ASPECT OF THE GAME!
