I know that flint is from gravel, and I know its a chance drop.
and now that I have a despenser I need to fill it with arrows. Im getting a nice collection of feathers due to zombies and evil alien chickens. how ever the flint part is falling behind. I have alot of gravel stored away and I only use it for roads (thinking of replacing it with cobble stone so it matches the stairs)
some times at night when I have nothing to do I do Lines. this gets old really fast but at least im getting flint out of it. Iv seem some crazy videos of people making stuff like cobble stone generators, water elevators and other stuff I would have never thought of. So maybe, just maybe some one knows of a quicker way to collect flint from gravel than placing them in a line and breaking them with your bare hands?

Gravel is destroyed when hitting a troch or half step. Build a tower sort of thing with a torch at the bottom, drop gravel onto it from the top. I'm not sure if this give you flint, though.
Forget about crafting arrows if you need bulk for dispensers.
Either find a skeleton dungeon and make a trap around it or make a huge black room spawner trap.
The amount of time needed to get arrows from gravel will not be enough to support dispensper.

Never seen this produce any flint myself, and Minepedia confirms that it's a quick way to get rid of big stacks of gravel, but NOT a way to obtain flint.
The fastest way is to dig out gravel deposits with shovels. The shovel won't improve your chances of producing flint from any given block of gravel, but will allow you to dig more blocks in a given period of time, which will increase your rate of flint production.
I like to use gravel as scaffolding for my construction projects. It lets me pillar up to the height where I want to work, and then every time I remove a pillar, I get a few chunks of flint as a free bonus. Unfortunately this won't help produce lots of flint quickly, but over time it can lead to substantial stockpiles of flint.
1. Mine 1 stack of gravel
2. Go to the surface. Re-place gravel in a tower straight up to the sky.
3. Mine the gravel again.
4. repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have a lot of flint.
5. Profit.

Yeah just create towers of gravel and keep digging until all are flint.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers.
I tryed that dropping them on a tourch, a 64 stack over and over and over, never once dropped a flint.
Unless I was just ungodly unlucky you cant get flint that way.

You're serious? Because when I find gravel underground I almost invariably torch-mine it and I have several flints.
What I did was make a shaft that I could get to the bottom to by stairs and have a hole in the roof going up to the top so I could drop gravel in, go down and mine it with a shovel or my hands till i got flint. Butif you want to make arrows for dispensers look for a dungeon that spawns skeletons or hunt for them on the surface. (Hope this helped)
You get to level 30, then you enchant a diamond object and get Fortune III. Then, find gravel and enjoy
Or why don't you just turn a skeleton dungeon into a mob farm? Arrows, bones and maybe even a few enchanted bows
Yeah, January of 2011 is pretty old and many times what you want to add to a conversation that old wasn't even an option back when the conversation was happening.
yeh a good way is to enchant a shovel to fortune III only problem with using a shovel to dig the gravel is that it eats through the shovel and would be kind of a waste just build a massive stack mine it using stone shovels and repeat until satisfied

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
