I don't know whether this question belongs here or in technical support but I thought I'd offer it here first.
My six year old computer with on-board video and 2GB RAM clearly struggles when playing Minecraft even with a heavy dose of optimization (my FPS is typically in the 20s to 30s.) So be it, the game does work and I enjoy it.
That said, I have particular difficulty fighting the Creeper with a sword and wonder if it's my inexperience, my computer's lag, or a combination of both.
Here's the routine: In an open area I advance on the Creeper, strike him, retreat, then watch him explode. He doesn't chase me after striking him, he just stands in place for a moment then blows up. It gets rather frustrating repairing the huge blast holes he leaves -- not to mention actually getting killed by him when boxed into tight quarters.
I've no problem with skeletons, spiders and zombies so I won't blame my computer lag offhand but because the Creeper involves timing, I can't help wonder if computer lag comes into play. Lag? Inexperience? Both? Any thoughts?
Well, since I have about 8-10 FPS and I only get mob lag on computers, I'd say its due to just not running away fast enough. I suggest a bow.
Also, when you hit it, does it flash red immediately? Or does it have like a 2-3 second waiting time?
Creepers have a very long range, so you have to move pretty far back to prevent them from exploding. Easiest way to avoid it is to sprint attack them so they get knocked back farther.
Thank you all for your timely replies which lead me to believe my suspicions were correct; it's more about practice and coordination than FPS. That I've made it over the first hurdle - simply surviving the attack - is at least some success; combat practice will hopefully lead to more.
A reminder of how destructive the Creeper can be, especially to a coastline:
