Here's a way I just discovered that you can build a pillar from the top down, even hanging out over the void, like in a skyblock or other custom map that leaves you hanging in space. I've never seen this before, but If it's not new, please let me know. It's simple enough that I'd be surprised if I was the first to notice it.
It's not new. I've seen it at least as early as this 2012 Enderman farm tutorial video by Panda4994, and he even used it as the thumbnail shot for the video:

Thanks for letting me know. I've just been stumped for so long about how to get down from high overhangs that I was surprised that such an easy way was possible. I really wonder why I never heard of this before? I was watching some skyblock videos and I never saw anyone use it, even though water and lava was available. Seems like everyone swims down a water stream to place blocks under the skyblock world. This way would be so much easier and safer.
Of course there is always the even older method of just swimming in falling water and placing blocks underneath. It's a bit more nail biting method, however once you get used to it, it's not so bad.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Using Lava is the only way, unless if you fall off you might get one or two blocks to go in place before you fall to your death.

You can also use a regular piston facing down and just push the blocks downwards.
Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? hehe. I'm going to run right out and give it a try.
Of course you can only push so many of them before you have to climb down and start a fresh row from a lower level. But that's genius!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

And by the way, someone else did it way before me.... I'm just sharing
