Been playing Minecraft for ages (I'll admit, pirated at first, but it was just too good to not buy). But clearly never post on the forum.
I come here in search of answers. I cannot get my mob farm to work, it's of the "shifting floor" design and I don't take credit for the design... I've tried everything and Googled as many questions and methods as I can. The farm itself is at height 194, my inital thought was perhaps I was above the mob spawn ceiling, but a little test (see third picture) revealed that mobs are happy to spawn at that height.
I cut out the wall to watch from a distance for anything (with the floor not moving) and nothing spawns at all. I tried moving some of the "anti-spider" blocks and still nothing spawns. There is nothing around a 128 radius and even so, I've lit up most of the caves below.
This is on Multiplayer, but upon testing, one of the Admins helped out by spawning some monsters in there and the grinder works as planned, it's just that nothing spawns naturally in there for some reason...
I've obvioiusly missed something... But I can't figure out what it is.
1. Don't meantion that you pirated the game. Piracy is a dominating topic and it will take over the entire thread. The fact that you bought it is still overshadowed by the fact that you stole an indie game.
2. Close that window. There should be no light what so ever in there. Judging by that picture, you don't have enough darkness in the room.
As I said, I opened up the side for the purpose of testing. Normally is in completely enclosed with light level 0.
The floor is on a redstone clock, it only shifts once every couple seconds.
Normally I stand about 40 blocks away at the collection area. I know they don't move at >32 blocks, but that's what this grinder does, it doesn't need them to move.

Please, by telling him not to talk about a subject in his post, you're talking about the subject egging people on.
1. Don't tell people how to post. You're not them
2. Piracy is not a "Dominating" topic, and by using the word that way that sentence doesn't even make any sense.
3. By telling someone not to draw attention to something, you're drawing attention to it yourself.
End.
Now, I'd rewatch the video that showed you how to do it. Maybe you've missed a step...I know I always do.
Who made it? Kiershar?
If its so, I tried one of his sky grinders on my SMP server and it didn't work with the spawning, might be the multiplayer aspect. Good luck!

Way to add fuel to the fire there, fella!
On-topic: Are you sure it's the right amount of blocks high? And if it's on a SMP server then are you sure the admins don't have that area protect where mobs cannot spawn?
I forgot who came up with the original shifting floor design, I've got the YouTube video in my history somewhere, I don't want to credit the wrong person.
The mob spawn floor is at height 194. The entire structure ranges from about 180 - 200. It does use the water pushing design, but BELOW where the mobs spawn, the floor glitches them through, so they're not required to move.
I'm sure the area isn't protected and I'm sure I followed the guide correctly, as I said, if one of the Admins forces some spawns, it works perfectly. There has to be some reason why nothing is spawning to begin with...

Hell I'm stumped maybe the design just doesn't work with 1.2.5? =/

It appears so... Extremely annoying considering it's all legit and on SMP, "hey! come check out my awesome mob grinder that doesn't work!".
I would like to find out why it's broken. Perhaps something to do with the lava below it emitting light? (even though it's blocked by a floor). Or maybe the way the pistons move, it lets in a bit of light quickly and temporarily?
How long is the delay for the shifting of the floor? Perhaps try making it 20 seconds or something and see if that fixes it.
There are issues with mob systems above 128. Don't want to go looking for the Docm77 and keishar videos about it right now though. Try the following... Get on top of the trap. Open up the debug screen and see what the LC value says... Pillar up until the LC value increases. Then get back down and watch the trap to see if mobs start spawning... Repeat until the LC reaches 255 to see if any of that gets it working... If that works, build an antenna on top of the trap that will break that barrier for you... That might work... You could go searching the keishar videos to see how be built his antenna.
- Are there other mob grinders on the server? Or a high population of players with a whole bunch of loaded chunks?
The server you are playing on might be mob capped by stuff spawning in other grinders, or around other players. A server can't spawn unlimited mobs.
- Have you gotten ANY spawns in there, or just a really, really low rate?
The spawning floor looks smallish. You want at least 1000 spawnable blocks to get good rates out of a grinder of that type.
I don't think the height is your issue. So long as your not at/near the build limit and you have physically gone up to the top 128 blocks on the Y axis to activate the higher area for spawning, the game will spawn mobs up there. I would build an exact replica in a single player creative world, including the height, and test some tweaks there. I would bet you get spawns without any changes in a creative world on your own, but you might want to add some delay between floor shifting to get more.

Let me know if any of that works out for you.
You sir, are a god in human form. Made a makeshift antenna out of dirt and BAM! Mobs everywhere! Thank you very much!
No idea why this is required though, some sort of glitch I guess.

Glad I could help. Not sure if it's a glitch or something by design... I heard something about them limiting what they process with the new height in order to keep the performance up so could be related.

3. You may need to make the room bigger.
I'm finally back. See profile for details.
also you have to be at least 24 blocks away (more or less) for mobs to spawn in there

What height is this Mob trap on.
Height doesn't affect mob spawning.

Which bug? Does it prevent spawning specific to the moving floor mob grinder?
As I said, I created another random dirt platform at height 194 and it spawned monsters fine.
It does affect it.
any mob traps on level 236-256 wont work.

Yeah, that antenna will make it work somehow...
